Vote and Voice: Women’s Organizations and Political Literacy, 1915–1930 is the first book-length study to address the writing and speaking practices of members of women’s political organizations in the decade after the suffrage movement. During those years, women still did not have power within deliberative and administrative organs of politics, despite their recent enfranchisement. Because they were largely absent from diplomatic circles and political parties, post-suffrage women’s organizations developed widespread, cumulative rhetorical practices of public discourse to push for reform within traditional politics.

 

Situating the project within feminist rhetorical history, Sharer traces the origins of the League of Women Voters and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in relation to the extensive networks that nineteenth-century women formed around political issues such as slavery, suffrage, temperance, and labor legislation. She then presents a detailed analysis of the rhetorical and pedagogical methods the organizations developed to empower their members as political reformers and to contest the rhetorical conventions of patriarchal political structures.

 

These methods included strategically positioning their arguments within diplomatic bureaucracies, planning study curricula and discussion clubs within women’s organizations and educational associations, and producing instructional texts. The volume also explores the motives and means by which reformers challenged the highly structured, male-dominated, two-party system through their advocacy of non-partisanship, their popular satires of partisan loyalty, and their critiques of partisan journalism.

            

Extending contemporary understandings of women’s political literacy in the post-suffrage era, Vote and Voice is historically significant as well as pedagogically beneficial for instructors who connect rhetorical education with public participation by integrating writing and speaking skills into a curriculum that aims to prepare educated students and active citizens. Great for beginners, a few tips for pros

The Time / Life series of books always have excellent professional writing and illustrations. This is no exception. Illustrations are often better than photos because the artist can show us the crucial functional parts while editing out superfluous details.

I bought this on the recommendation of a friend who has less experience in woodworking than I, so I was not too surprised to find nothing new to me. That does not mean it isn't a good book though. If you do not already know how to: Cut threads on dowels, rout fluted columns, make jigs for router-use on a lathe, etc. Then this is a fine addition to your library.

In general, most books of this type spend too much space on basics in the introduction and not enough space on the actual subject. I suppose this is because publishers do not want to get sued when a neophyte injures himself doing something he doesn't understand. It may also be true that authors need to "fill-out" the books they are commissioned to write in these "works-for-hire." Absolutely no one who is even interested in the subject of "Advanced Routing" needs a primer on "the anatomy of a router" or "the different types of routers." Nor should such readers ever need rudimentary info on setting depth, choosing bits or what direction to feed. Those are ALL basic things, not "advanced."

Whatever the reason, too much space is given to basic stuff that any moderately experienced woodworker would know. I have found this to be the case for ANY woodworking book that has the word "Advanced" or "Complete" in the title.

Having mentioned that as my only criticism, I would recommend this to anyone not yet familiar with routing techniques that go beyond simple joinery. Most of the so-called "advanced" methods in here are for making decorative details on furniture or "freehand" techniques for sign-making. There are no "new" or "unique" jigs here, (at least to me) but this is a good reference for those who do not yet know how to make decorative details with routers.

I should point out that ALL of the decorative details in here can be made by hand, and nowadays, can be done with inexpensive CNC routers. So if you are looking for an "advanced" routing book in the sense that it is modern, "cutting-edge" or even just "up to date," this is NOT that book. It was published in 1995, and CNC routing definitely existed back then. However, modern computing power has reduced the cost of CNC routing-control so drastically that this book is out of date regarding that subject. It does not mention computer controlled routing at all.

If you are interested in cutting dovetails with your router economically, and you don't know how to do that yet, then this is definitely a book you should read! They show you how to make your own jigs and templates for dovetailing.

Personally, I am constantly amazed at the bewildering array of commercial router-jigs for this simple task. Even more astounding is the outrageous prices manufacturers ask for those fancy commercial jigs. If you didn't know better, you'd think there was some magical "secret" to routing dovetails, or that only expensive jigs can dovetail well. That's obviously not true. Many woodworkers were routing dovetails and other joints DECADES before the advent of commercial jigs, myself included. So, if you are one of those aspiring woodworkers who wants to rout many accurate repeatable dovetails, or just a few specially designed dovetails without spending a fortune on overpriced gizmos, get this book.

I suspect that books like these are taken out of print simply because manufacturers despise them and refuse to advertise with publishers who tell the truth. These books don't show pretty pictures of name-brand tools. Instead, they use superior illustrations with "generic" tools. And worst of all (from a manufacturer's viewpoint) books like these make readers realize how badly they are duped and taken by advertising and hype. There is not a single dovetail joint (or any other routable joint) that cannot be replicated with homemade jigs and templates.... yes, that includes the fanciful decorative dovetails and finger-joints that Akeda, WoodRat and others hawk.

Think about this; American craftsmen built airplanes and other complex machines with hand-tools and routers before WWII. They didn't have fancy expensive store-bought jigs.

In my experience, homemade jigs are not only cheaper, faster and more versatile, they are often more accurate, reliable and easier to set up. Obviously, you must have some understanding of jig-making and accurate layout tools / methods to make these jigs. Perhaps that is why so many manufacturers can sell so many different jigs; because there are so many new woodworkers who don't know these fundamental techniques. It surprises neophytes to learn they can cut the same joints more accurately in less time with $10 homemade jigs that they struggle to do with their grotesquely overpriced commercial jigs.

Without describing everything about dovetailing with homemade jigs ad nauseam, I can offer this advice:
Buy at least TWO routers, one for each part of the dovetail: pins and tails. Once they are adjusted, it saves a bunch of time having two routers.
Use Lexan (Polycarbonate) instead of wood for the bearing-surfaces of your jigs. (it doesn't shrink or swell and it is clear for visibility)
Other than that, you only need an accurate square (like Starrett) and an adjustable square. With those tools, and your routers, you can make ANY kind of jig for ANY kind of routing-joinery.

If you are an experienced woodworker or looking for modern info on CNC routing, this book won't help you.

If you are a novice who works alone in a one-man shop and need some methods for decorative details with your router, this is a good addition to your reference library.

If you do not yet know how to make your own joinery templates and jigs for dovetails and other joints, then definitely get this book! It WILL save you hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars on needless expensive commercial dovetail-jigs.

James Pickett Jones places Logan in his southern Illinois surroundings as he examines the role of the political soldier in the Civil War. When Logan altered his stance on national issues, so did the southern part of the state. Although secession, civil strife, Copperheadism, and the new attitudes created by the war contributed to this change of position in southern Illinois, Logan’s role as political and military leader was important in the region’s swing to strong support of the war against the Confederacy, to the policies of Lincoln, and eventually, to the Republican party.

Perhaps the most capable of the political generals, Logan earned a reputation as a courageous efficient officer, rising from regimental to army commander.

John Logan was considered one of the best "political generals" in the Union Army, rising in rank from a private at First Bull Run to general only a few months later while under U.S. Grant's command. Before the war he was a US Congressman representing southern Illinois (called "Egypt"); he was a Democrat and a major critic of Lincoln. By the end of the war Logan had switched parties and had won a surprising victory to Congress as a Republican. Although not a full biography (it ends with his return to Congress in 1867), Jones has written a workmanlike account of Logan's early life and political career, and especially his role in the army during the war.

Logan was born in Illinois in 1826, fought in the Mexican War, and began practicing law by 1851. A staunch Democrat (southern Illinois, his district, was rural, Democratic, and Southern in sympathy), he was elected to the Illinois legislature in 1852. He served a number of terms before being elected to Congress in 1858. An anti-abolitionist, he felt much of the troubles facing the nation in 1860 was caused by "the impertinent spirit of the anti-slavery party of the North." But he believed in the preservation of the Union above all things, and when war broke out he was among the first to heed the call to arms.

He was with Grant at Belmont, MO, and Fort Donelson, distinguishing himself at both places. He took part in the Vicksburg campaign and served under McPherson during the Atlanta campaign, taking over command of the XVII Corps upon McPherson's death in July 1864. Sherman relieved him, however, only days later, a move that drew Logan's wrath. Logan continued to serve, though, participating in the famous march to the sea and once again commanding the Army of the Tennessee from May to August 1865. After the war Logan returned to Illinois and ran for Congress again, this time as a Republican - a Radical one to boot. Jones's biography ends with Logan's election, though Logan served many years in Congress and the Senate, helped form the Grand Army of the Republic and establish Decoration Day, and was on the Presidential ticket as VP with James G. Blaine in 1884. He died in 1886.

Jones's biography is quite good: it is serviceable and measures the man well. There is not a lot of analysis or behind-the-scenes conjecturing, just good, solid factual information presented in an efficient manner. One wonders if Jones ever contemplated a complete biography of Logan, seeing how prominent his post-Civil War life was.

Readable bio of an unusual general.

"Black Jack" Logan was perhaps the best of the "political" generals of the Union army.
His military service, from Forts Henry and Donelson, through Vicksburg and Atlanta and on to the Carolinas, demonstrated not only his own abilities and personal courage, but also was emblematic of the skilll and sacrifice of his "Egyptians" of southern Illinois generally. His political thought, too, illustrative of the times, reflected the shift in Illinois opinion from initial confusion and wavering, to near-solid support for Lincoln and his war policies.
In conjunction with this very readable biography, the reader might be also be interested in "Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife", Mrs. Logan's memoirs, which cannot be regarded as entirely reliable but which are a valuable adjunct to Jones' biography and give a colorful insight into the times.

Great technique book even 30 years later!

Keith Vitalis list of accomplishments are long, he is part of a generation they is sadly being lost with every passing day. He and a hand full of black belts worked hard and being sport Karate/Taekwondo sparring to the spotlight. This book published in May of 1984 was a book used by many if the point fighters to use and practice the concepts from within. While many things have evolved, this book is still viable 30 years later and will be so true 30 years from now as well.

Williamson's account of operations with John Singleton Mosby is simply superb. Fortunately, for the sake of history, Williamson was in the habit of keeping a diary which, along with a compelling literary style, gives a modern immediacy to Mosby's guerrilla operations. Williamson, however, is no simple diarist. He has brilliantly footnoted his account with official orders and letters from both Federal and Confederate commanders and officials. By doing so, Williamson let's us into the thought processes--and frequently the embarrassment, confusion and humiliation--experienced by his enemies. It also gives us the opportunity to compare Mosby claims directly against Federal battle reports. Generally speaking, Mosby seems more credible than his enemies.

Mosby was certainly not the first guerrilla leader. Guerrilla warfare has been going on as long as there has been war. In Mosby's hands, however, guerrilla warfare became something of a science. He knew full well that his primary value to the Confederacy was as an irritant to the Federal colossus. With a tiny cadre of soldiers, seldom exceeding 300 in number, he is able to 'tie up' twenty or thirty times his number. Amazingly, despite the fact that the Federals conduct a scorched earth campaign to rid themselves of his nuisance, Mosby time and time again comes out the victor killing, wounding and capturing far more Federal troops than he loses himself. No, it wasn't all roses. Guerilla warfare, especially in an environment in which the enemy has enormous advantages in manpower, weaponry and logisitics is DANGEROUS. Many of Mosby's men are captured and killed. Despite this Mosby seems to have little problem in attracting additional recruits.

Recruits were sometimes more of a problem than a solution. Mosby's fame had spread over the South and many a regular soldier longed to be a Mosby man. Therefore desertions from the regular army to Mosby's Confederacy was a real problem that Mosby solved simply by returning all such stragglers to Confederate service. No doubt Mosby also attracted some undisciplined men who deserted to the enemy when things got tough. Still, as a group operating under extreme difficulties, Mosby's Rangers were a remarkably loyal and resilient bunch.

Mosby's tactics should be studied by all military men who would wage guerrilla war or conduct counter-guerrilla operations. Mosby's strength came from the land. He operated on ground that he was intimate with, where most of the local families were sympathetic to the Confederacy and were more than willing to help with shelter, food, protection and especially information. Mosby forms his band to attack an enemy strong point, patrol, train, sutlers' wagons, cavalry column etc. only to disband and disappear like the morning mist. He and his men are audacity personified. They read the enemy and when they find that the Yankees have faltered--even for a moment--the Yankke enemy is confronted by whirling, swirling, screaming terrors. The Yankee line usually breaks with large bags of prisoners and supplies. Mosby and his boys are horse thieves par excellence, a task that is all important to them in that they use up so many horses in their numerous fights.

Interestingly, despite the fact that the South is relentlessly ground down, Mosby is successful up unti the very last moment. Federal soldiers, who may have participated in Lee's surrender, find themselves killed and captured by Mosby.

Mosby strikes where he isn't expected and let's the enemy strike where he isn't. Following Federal raids, he trails Yankee detachments like a wolf tracking a herd of caribou. He cuts off stragglers and destroys them. If he detects a weakness he falls on the main body like a whirlwind and drives them from the field in confusion. It is said that George Patton sat at Mosby's knee as a child and heard Mosby's war stories. I don't doubt it.

Although written many years after the war ended, Worsham's story is beautifully written and imparts some of the immediacy, triumph and terror of fighting a war that was ultimately lost but of which Worsham himself usually experienced corps and personal victory. Wounded at Winchester, Virginia in Sept. 1864, Worsham spends the remaining months of the war as an invalid. He witnesses the fall of Richmond and, years later, he fills in the combat details of his unit during the months he was absent.

Worsham, who must have spent a long time preparing his work, enumerates battles, company rosters, names of men and officers and sometimes their ultimate fates. He provides us with drawings of the increasing raggedness of Confederate veterans as the war dragged on, giving stark evidence of Confederate poverty. He also salutes southern and Confederate women who he believes were at least as courageous as the men. With the men absent in the Army and/or dead or wounded, the women ran the farms, stores, plantations etc. that supplied the suffering army.

This is a story of what people are capable of when subjected to terrible stress. I think that our ability to withstand adversity is both one of our greatest strengths and weaknesses.
