Grassi explores the sense in which the first principles of rational thought come from the metaphorical power of the word. He finds the basis for his conception in the last great thinker of the Italian humanist tradition, Giambattista Vico (1668–1744). He concentrates on Vico’s understanding of imagination and the sense of human ingenuity contained in metaphor. For Grassi, rhetorical activity is the essence and inner life of thought when connected to the metaphorical power of the word.

Originally published in English in 1980, Rhetoric as Philosophy has been out of print for some time. In his foreword to this reprint edition, Burke scholar Timothy W. Crusius rues the lack of concentrated attention to Grassi because "what he had to say about rhetoric is at least as significant as, for example, what Kenneth Burke taught us".
About the Author
Ernesto Grassi, former student of Martin Heidegger and the author of numerous books in German and Italian, was a professor of philosophy at the University of Munich and director of the Institute of Humanistic and Philosophic Studies. Well known and respected in Europe as a scholar and philosopher, Grassi died in 1991.

Humanism Renewed!

Ernesto Grassi's book revives an important tendency in philosophical thought which is overshadowed by the more dominant and formalistic trends originating in the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. References to Giambattista Vico and his critique of Cartesianism establish Grassi's project of recovering an epistemology based upon classical rhetorical approaches to mind and reality. This is a valuable text for adoption in any class on theory of knowledge in that it introduces students of philosophy to a humanistic alternative to the predominant modern rationalistic modes of thinking. Similarly, it casts an important light upon the quarrel between ancients and moderns, and consequently is of great interest to the history of culture and ideas in European thought. It is especially relevant to issues relating to modern political experience in the public sphere, giving rise to a renewed appreciation for the political imagination in collective life. Highly recommended.
