For six decades our only record of Babel's visit has been the contents of letters and postcards sent abroad to his mother and sister. In King of Odessa, Robert A. Rosenstone imagines a version of this visit and the novel Babel wrote during those weeks. Babel himself is concerned with more than literary plots as he considers an escape just as he starts an affair with an actress who may be a police spy. He also ruminates on his past-his childhood as a sickly Jewish boy, the horrifying 1905 pogrom, the famous rides with the Cossacks that inspired Red Calvary, and above all his complicated relationships with women. Throughout the novel Rosenstone captures Babel's lively wit, his exhaustion with fame and the Soviet system, and his infectious charm.

This would prove to be Babel's last visit to Odessa. Three years later, he was arrested as a spy and executed. Rosenstone, the acclaimed biographer of writer and activist John Reed, mixes historical facts and fiction with the talent of a gifted storyteller. The result is a captivating exploration of a great writer surrounded by history and on the brink of falling out of it forever.

About the Author
Robert A. Rosenstone is a professor of history at the California Institute of Technology. His works include Romantic Revolutionary: A Biography of John Reed (Knopf, 1975), the basis for the film Reds; Visions of the Past: The Challenge of Film to Our Idea of History (Harvard, 1995); and Mirror in the Shrine (Harvard, 1988).

A cleaver and imaginative novel

Rosenstone examines a well known literary character, Isaac Babel, and creates a novel that is quite magical. Babel, who is already a famous writter, goes back to his hometown of Odessa, leaving behind a wife and child in France. While there, he encounters much excitement and intrigue with the many people and places he encounters. Using the letters, postcards and knowledge of the life of Isaac Babel, Rosenstone weaves together fact, fiction and farce, and creates a book which is as ejoyable to read as it is beautifully written. Up until the last pages, the reader is unaware if what he/she is seeing is fact, fiction or both, or if it really does not make any difference in the end. A must for anyone interested in intelligent literally fiction with a unique twist.

Romping and imaginative

The conceit of this new novel is that it is a recently discovered and long-alluded-to lost work of Isaac Babel, written in the summer of 1936, during his last visit to his hometown of Odessa. It is a daring undertaking, and Rosenstone largely pulls it off (only at times giving his narrator a bit much knowledge of contemporary events), delivering a romping and imaginative firsthand (and, yes, Babel-esque) view of life in the brutal chaos that was Russia of the 1930s. terrific debut novel

Rosenstone takes on the daunting task of imagining the life of Soviet writer Isaac Babel, whose literary reputation was lost/destroyed during the Soviet regime's darkest and most repressive days. In this fictitious re-creation of Babel's return to his hometown before being arrested and executed as a spy, Rosenstone creates the possibility that Babel was actually involved in a plot to help political dissidents flee. This is a tragic cautionary tale, a must-read for those interested in the genre.

About the Author

Ulla E. Dydo is Professor Emerita at the City University of New York and is considered to be one of the world's foremost Stein scholars. She is also the editor of A Stein Reader (Northwestern, 1993) and the co-editor of The Letters of Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder (Yale University Press, 1996). She lives in New York City.

William Rice (1931–2006) worked with Ulla Dydo on A Stein Reader and with Edward Burns and Ulla Dydo on various editions of Stein’s letters. A painter, he conducted extensive research on Picasso’s notebooks for Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.

two gifts

Gertrude Stein is one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. She has influenced all modern art, literature and theatre. She has often been ignored or set aside as unreadable,unperformable, opaque. Yet when approached with an open mind; the genius is awe inspiring. Ula Dydo, is another gift, someone who has taken the time to sit down and explore, to play in her own scholarly way. Dydo's love of Stein is contagious. She has created an opening that I hope a lot of curious people step into.

Really Getting To Know Gertrude Stein's Writings!

What better way to get to know Gertrude Stein than to be guided through some of her key writings by one of the world's best Stein scholars, Ulla Dydo! It's not "Stein For Dummies," but it certainly is a very readable book which analyzes Stein's texts bringing in information from her life as appropriate to get a clearer picture of not only what she wrote, but why and how she wrote what she wrote. A must-have book for anyone who is really serious about reading and understanding Stein, as well as a great introduction to Stein's other works if the only thing you've ventured to read is THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ALICE B. TOKLAS, which is also, by the way, addressed in this book.

An Elucidation

Since I first read Three Lives in high school I became fascinated with the writing of Gertrude Stein. During the past three decades I have read all her work. Because she requires so much effort, so much attention and concentration to detail, I have also tried reading as much about her as I could find; none as enlightening, as lovingly researched, as clearly written as Ulla Dydo's The Language That Rises. Hers is truly an "elucidation!"

An excellent book on the martial art aspects of Judo. There is information in this book you will not find in other Judo books.

I am somewhat surprised at the harsh criticism of this book by the one lone reviewer on the book’s selling page. I found this to be a unique and very informative (Black Belt Judo: A guide to advanced throws and formal holds, kata and self-defense by George R. Palulski, Jr.) book. As a Godan (5th Dan) in (Kodakan) Judo I found this book to be very interesting and informative about the martial art of Judo and not just the sport aspects. Unfortunately, I do not think the American Society of Classical Judoka is still active in promoting Judo as a complete martial art.

This book should actually be a companion to the first book (The Complete book of Judo, though dated, covers the basic Kodakan throws) and should probably be read before tackling this volume. This large 81/2 by 11 inch 210 page hardcover is organized into four parts along with a detailed appendices section.

Part one provides a background, theory and conditioning, covering a historical overview, advanced theory and strength conditioning. The second part shows the advanced throwing methods, holds, locks and Ne-Waza strategy. The third part covers some the formal exercises (Kata) of Judo. Part fourth focuses on the self-defense techniques, including Atemi-Waza (striking and kicking) and self-defense against modern-day situations. The six appendix sections cover treating and preventing injuries, the Kodokan emblem, belt requirements, opening a dojo successfully, nutritional factors and footnotes for further information.

In conclusion, this book is no longer in print but if you can get a copy you may want to check it out. It explains a part of Judo few people know about because the sport aspects are only taught today. It is unfortunate the Martial Art of Judo is no longer taught in the vast majority of Judo clubs today.
If you are a collector, as I am, of older and earlier martial arts books, you may want to get a copy of this book along with The Complete Book of Judo by the same author. Both volumes are no longer in print but Amazon books may have some copies for sale.

If you are animating cartoon violence, and want to avoid throws and arm locks that humans have actually ever done, then this book will be an invaluable resource.

Are you bored with judo, and want your book to cover other topics? Maybe you want to learn some karate, and you specifically want to learn that crappy stuff they teach elementary school kids while avoiding anything practical? This is the book for you.

It would also be a good book if you want to dare a drunk judoka to do something implausible. You can flip open to almost any page in the throws section. Lots of moves not from the Kodokan. Imagine randomly combining Japanese words & then trying to imagine what the throw would be like: dead elbow throw. Collar shoulder throw. Double clip.

If you saw the Karate Kid movies, and remember the cook head band, and thought that you need that for judo, then you'll like the photos in this book. If you are envious of the aikido black apron that makes it harder to roll, and you thought "that would be so awesome in white", then you'll really like the photos in this book.

The first volume provides a general introduction to weather and looks at how clouds form, cloud types and their identification, why there is fog, where wind comes from, and local winds and the regions they effect. Volume 2 covers tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, floods and droughts, and precipitation. Hurricane names up to the year 2000 are listed, along with an explanation of how they come about. A chapter on optical illusions includes several nifty experiments such as how to make a rainbow. Volume 3 covers forecasting, climate differences, and how humans may or may not influence the weather. Also included are directions for making several simple weather instruments and instructions for using them, the names of companies that sell weather instruments, and a list of several related Internet sites. Each book opens with the same thorough glossary. Many of the chapters list suggestions for further reading. There are some minor but distracting editorial errors. Black-and-white photos appear throughout but are often too dark to see clearly; this is particularly disappointing when they are used to illustrate the different types of clouds. The same list of sources (books, articles, CD-ROMs, and Web sites) and index are repeated in each volume. My favorite cookbook

I bought this cookbook because I stumbled on the recipe for Seafood Ravioli with Calamari Butter Sauce. I use the book all the time. Try the Shrimp and Asparagus Pasta, or the meatloaf. Or the Chicken Chili. Or Jackie's flourless chocolate cake. Everything I have made from this book has been better than anything like it I have ever seen. And, the quantities are just right for entertaining.

Favorite cookbook!

After meeting Tony at a class in LA, I bought this cookbook. After practically loving it to death, I had it spiral bound! I don't think I've made a recipe from this book that wasn't deemed a "make again". Corn pudding, cobbler, balsamic vinaigrette, BBQ sauce, the list goes on. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting something a bit more special, but still manageable for the average cook.

I adore this cookbook. I am not a cook.... But I love to feed my loved ones and eat and this is the first book I grab when I am searching for a delicious recipe I know will be a hit and probably become a family classic!!!
The Brussel sprout recipe.... The Caesar salal....the angel hair pasta with garlic and onions....Rosemary chicken strips....pear compote...meatloaf (our dinner tonight)...the steamed broccoli salad, and so on and so on. Delicious and healthy food for all the family!!!

This is not a bad book... there are some good recipes.
Unfortunately, a lot of the dishes that traditionally
have hamhock (or other piece-o-piggy) just had turkey
instead. I was hoping for something more clever and
tasty than that, I guess. This is a goog cookbook if
you are looking for non-pig dishes.

Ellsworth Mason (Ph.D., Yale; LHD, Hon., Hofstra), head of a library building consulting firm in Lexington, KY, is former Director of Libraries at Colorado College, Hofstra University, and the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has lectured extensively on librarianship and taught at the graduate library school, University of Illinois, Urbana. He has published eight other books (one by Scarecrow) and more than a hundred professional articles, and his biography appears in Who's Who in the World.
