An excellent book on the martial art aspects of Judo. There is information in this book you will not find in other Judo books.

I am somewhat surprised at the harsh criticism of this book by the one lone reviewer on the book’s selling page. I found this to be a unique and very informative (Black Belt Judo: A guide to advanced throws and formal holds, kata and self-defense by George R. Palulski, Jr.) book. As a Godan (5th Dan) in (Kodakan) Judo I found this book to be very interesting and informative about the martial art of Judo and not just the sport aspects. Unfortunately, I do not think the American Society of Classical Judoka is still active in promoting Judo as a complete martial art.
This book should actually be a companion to the first book (The Complete book of Judo, though dated, covers the basic Kodakan throws) and should probably be read before tackling this volume. This large 81/2 by 11 inch 210 page hardcover is organized into four parts along with a detailed appendices section.
Part one provides a background, theory and conditioning, covering a historical overview, advanced theory and strength conditioning. The second part shows the advanced throwing methods, holds, locks and Ne-Waza strategy. The third part covers some the formal exercises (Kata) of Judo. Part fourth focuses on the self-defense techniques, including Atemi-Waza (striking and kicking) and self-defense against modern-day situations. The six appendix sections cover treating and preventing injuries, the Kodokan emblem, belt requirements, opening a dojo successfully, nutritional factors and footnotes for further information.
In conclusion, this book is no longer in print but if you can get a copy you may want to check it out. It explains a part of Judo few people know about because the sport aspects are only taught today. It is unfortunate the Martial Art of Judo is no longer taught in the vast majority of Judo clubs today.
If you are a collector, as I am, of older and earlier martial arts books, you may want to get a copy of this book along with The Complete Book of Judo by the same author. Both volumes are no longer in print but Amazon books may have some copies for sale.

good gag gift, or white elephant gift for your sensei

If you are animating cartoon violence, and want to avoid throws and arm locks that humans have actually ever done, then this book will be an invaluable resource.
Are you bored with judo, and want your book to cover other topics? Maybe you want to learn some karate, and you specifically want to learn that crappy stuff they teach elementary school kids while avoiding anything practical? This is the book for you.
It would also be a good book if you want to dare a drunk judoka to do something implausible. You can flip open to almost any page in the throws section. Lots of moves not from the Kodokan. Imagine randomly combining Japanese words & then trying to imagine what the throw would be like: dead elbow throw. Collar shoulder throw. Double clip.
If you saw the Karate Kid movies, and remember the cook head band, and thought that you need that for judo, then you'll like the photos in this book. If you are envious of the aikido black apron that makes it harder to roll, and you thought "that would be so awesome in white", then you'll really like the photos in this book.
