Good overview on an often forgotten theater

Although this series of books often takes flack from purists, they are not meant to be the last word on the subject. I found this book a good overview of an often forgotten theater of WWII. In many respects the campaign was similar to others throughout the pacific. However, the China, India, Burma theater had it's own unique problems. For example, supplying troops was in itself a battle given the terrain, rogue Burmese gorillia units, questionable Chinese loyalty, and the unforgiving monsoon season and extreme heat. Combine all this with dense jungle, deadly animals, and disease and a determined enemy and you've got one hell of a combat environment! The book also covers air operations by the Flying Tigers, and the cargo aircraft but there is little info on the 10th Air Force.
The book gave a lot of ink to the commanders such as Stillwell, Chenault and others. The Burma Road was discussed only briefly and in reading further I found that the Burma Road was what lead to massive air lift operations over "The Hump" by cargo aircraft. There are entire books alone which describe the Burma Road as well as other aspects of the theater. This book is a good place to start. You can always pursue further reading. There is a bibliography at the end of the book.

Engaging coffee table history of CBI.

As with all the Time-Life books of wars, China-Burma is a quick journalistic account of the better known campaigns, events, and personalities of the relevant theatre. The title is an easily digested picture book with a magazine style; primarily an introduction for those with a casual interest in CBI. The reader will encounter intriguing stories of colourful commanders, incredible courage, and daring missions. The semiphotographic account is not a formal history book, and does not propose explanations of events. However, it does give quick understanding of the national attitudes and cultures which shaped the war in Southeast Asia.
Primarily, the book follows hot tempered theatre commander Joseph Stilwell, given the task of developing strategy and preparing troops despite insurmountable military and diplomatic obstacles. The struggle is made nearly hopeless from indifferent allied leaders, unprepared troops, corrupt governments and scarce supplies. The author has drawn heavily from Stilwell's own papers for first hand accounts of events, and for evaluations of people and strategic decisions. Much as a movie might, the narrative cuts from action to action between the creation of the CBI theatre in December 1941, to the capture of Rangoon, May 1945.
Many photographs accompany the text, which vividly describes the ordeals faced by allied troops fighting the Japanese onslaught. In the mountains, plains and jungles of burma and its surroundings, incredible sacrifices and achievements are made by soldiers amidst unbearable suffering and death. The tragic plight of millions of civillians suffering from war-induced famines, riots, displacement and poverty is also poignantly documented.
Among the pages of history, single chapters focussing on famous commanders and groups have been inserted for individual description. Though these illustrated commentaries of Stilwell, Chennault and the Flying Tigers, "Hump" ATC aviators, Wingate and his Chindits, and others are overly romantic and ocasionally contradict the main text, they are quite interesting reading, and are valuable for explaining the allied strategies used and their consequences.
Overall, this book is useful as an easily read guide to the more popular aspects of the China-Burma-India theatre. Read as an introduction to the conflict, it will give a clear impression of the particularly unconventional and obstacle-ridden nature of the conflict.

Fleeing Nazi Germany, anti-Fascist activists Fittko, a Jew, and her Protestant husband, Hans, found themselves in France when the war broke out. Although Germany had stripped them of their citizenship, the French treated them as enemy aliens and in 1940 husband and wife were confined in separate French concentration camps for a couple of months. As the Germans advanced, the prisoners escaped and reunited in unoccupied southern France, where, awaiting passports and transit visas, they helped to smuggle other emigres over the Pyrenees to Spain. The most famous refugee saved from the Nazis by the Fittkos was the philosopher Walter Benjamin, who during the arduous crossing was ailing from heart disease. Although he was unfailingly courteous, Benjamin insisted on lugging along a large, conspicuous briefcase that he said contained his new manuscript. Once over the border, the Spanish authorities informed Benjamin he would be returned to France, and he took his own life; the manuscript vanished. Fittko's clipped and compressed writing style, combined with much minutiae on French bureaucratic red tape and the refugees' chase after ever-elusive transit visas, diminish the book's emotional impact. Yet this stands as a worthy account of French wartime cowardice and xenophobia and of the brave souls who defied officialdom.

Fittko's book is a memoir of life as an "enemy alien" in France before and after the Nazi invasion of 1940. As a Jewish leftist reared in Berlin, Fittko and her husband Hans fled Germany in 1933 to apparent safety in France. German emigres were regarded as grave political threats, however, and they were rounded up and isolated in concentration camps in France. Fittko experienced the hunger, disease, and chaos of the Gurs camp. As Hitler's army swept through France, she and several comrades escaped. She was reunited with her husband at the foot of the Pyrenees. They made their way out of the country through a tortuous mountain pass. They also guided other refugees to safety. The book is illustrated with historical documents and original photographs (not seen). Although the story is unique and heroic, the prose is acceptable at best and often difficult to follow.

Escape Through the Pyrenees

ISBN 0810109891 - LCCC #91-9629 Original title "Mein Weg uber die Pyrenaen", in German. Does not say where the book was made/printed/manufactured. Paperback, 221 pages. Published by Northwestern University Press, in 1991. By Lisa Fittko, translated to English by David Koblick.

Elizabeth (Lisa) Eckstein was very young when World War I ended and she agreed with her father: there must never be another war. She was ten at the time and had no way of knowing that there would, in fact, be another war - or that she would be amongst the many largely unknown (short term renown is not the same as "known") heroes of this one. Politically active and anti-Facist, Lisa and her husband worked against the Nazis in every way available to them before fleeing themselves. From Berlin to Paris to a camp in Gurs, Lisa's story is not particularly uncommon. Until, that is, she begins helping others to escape the Nazis, via a route through the Pyrenees. Eventually Lisa and her husband are able to reach Cuba and, finally, America. (though I'm not sure that her husband reached the U.S. That's a strangely vague detail in the book.)

The first thing to strike me about this book is this one oddity: I have never, not once, read a book about WWII that has no reviews. Ever. Even the worst books about the era have reviews. I found that strange - and it made me want to read this one more than usual. The fact that Lisa Fittko settled, and died, in Chicago was certainly a small factor, of course. I can't explain that "hometown author" thing, but I confess I have it.

Escape was a hard book to read and even harder to review, for a couple reasons. For one thing, so very much happens in 221 pages. It's difficult, sometimes, to remember where the story began, because it moves so quickly and the Fittkos (and everyone else) go through so much in their fight against Facism and their eventual flight to freedom. It isn't especially well-written (whether that's the fault of the author or of the translator, I do not know), but it does hold your attention, in the way that falling down a hillside will hold your attention - you really have no other choice.

At the same time, despite being written by an old woman and then translated by a man, the book still reads as if it was written by a young woman with more important things on her mind (war, death, survival...) than writing a book - as if she is more telling a story than writing a book. It's an appealing way to "hear" her story.

After I'd finished this book, I did a small amount of research into Lisa Fittko, out of curiosity, looking for two bits of information. One, she mentions her husband Hans writing a book - I have not found it, and assume it was not published. I was also especially interested in her claim to have helped Walter Benjamin (author of Illuminations: Essays and Reflections) to escape with a briefcase "more valuable to him than his life." I can't come up with any real reason that Fittko would have lied, so I tend to believe her story, but sadly no other accounts seem to exist to confirm this tale.

In all, Escape is not a great read, or always easy to follow, but is worth reading for the smaller-scale, personal story of the years of WWII prior to the involvement of the United States. There are oodles of WWII heroes and books about them, but this is one that feels very real in a way that few others have, for me.

this is an excellent book! Lisa and her husband

For anyone who wants an inside look at how certain groups of Jewish refugees escaped over the Pyrenees, this is an excellent book! Lisa and her husband, Hans, were actually refugees themselves (Hans was not Jewish, but also escaping capture by the Nazis for his political writings), and worked for Varian Fry's organization, helping people escape over the mountains. The book also describes the Fittkos own escape in an entirely different way. I really liked the book!

There are a lot of secrets and stories of the War, but having stayed in the area in which the events of this book happened, the amazing feats of Lisa and Hans Fittko, and their efforts for the French Resistance to guide hundreds of people over an old smugglers track high in the Pyrenees into Spain without payment, is a wonderful insight into lives of people during the War.

Mom's Favorite Cookbook!

My mother is well-known by many for cooking fabulous meals and having the gift of finding delicious yet very easy recipes. This cook book has been, by far, the book she has most often recommended to family and friends for the last 10 years.

Important recommendation: When someone uses this book they need to know a few substitutions in ingredients. Some recipes call for ingredients that may stump you at first but after you get accustomed to just a few substitutions these recipes are very easy, fresh, yummy, satisfying and healthy. Three main things to know: certain recipes in this book call for double concentrated tomato paste. This comes in a tube (by Amore), found in most grocery stores, if you look. This tube is kept in your fridge to be used a little at a time. Other recipes call for boiled down chicken or fish broth. Mom substitutes bouillon cubes or bouillon paste (some are available without MSG) to keep on hand. (Or if you have time, boil the bones from a rotisserie chicken). A few recipes call for "hoop cheese" for which she substitutes farmer cheese.

Start with Garlic and Pine Nuts over pasta. It's so easy and yummy! For company the shrimp scampi recipe is great! After one gets used to a few minor substitutions this book is a gold mine!

Lot of good ideas, but not really fast, nor all that fabulous. Some good basic ideas that can be modified from the original to work better in my kitchen and for my tastes. Others might find it of greater value, however.

A Great Introduction to Magic and the Occult

This is the second of the Mysteries of the Unknown series that I have red and I have to say that they are very well done. Magical Arts gives a good overview of the major personalities involved in the development of magic and does a really good job of explaining the difference between high and low magic. One of my favorite things about this series is that I gives plenty of information about the subject but does not sensationalize it and does not neglect to at least mention alternate explanations for what is going on> This book does an especially good job of this is the last section where it looks at magical practices in the modern world and shows that even those of us that claim to not believe in magic at all still do certain things that would fall in this category it is just that they are so common place that the are not seen this way. If you are someone interested in the major personalities and topics that make up magic and presented in a fair and evenhanded way this book is a must read!
