A good book for its time, but past its prime ...

I bought this book from a third-party seller as it's not available from Amazon. I'm an Annie Sloan fan and use her chalk paints to spruce up estate sale furniture finds I come across. I also do a few murals here and there, so I thought it this book would be useful to add to my reference library. The date of the book should have been a clue to the style contained in the book. Children's rooms have evolved a lot since this book was written/released. There are some good ideas here, but I'm sure that there are many other more contemporary books containing childrens' room decor style. Most children's tastes now are quite different than those included here.

The main section of the book consists of 185 individual artist bibliographies, arranged by century from the early middle ages throughout the 20th century, with a cutoff birth date of 1930. A short biographical sketch introduces each artist; most of the bibliographies close with a list of public collections in which examples of the artist's work can be found.

Piland treats the general subject of women artists in a bibliography that includes surveys, biographical dictionaries, catalogs, bibliographies, microfilm collections, slide sets, and dissertations. The final section is a selected bibliography on needlework, the traditional art of women. With 43 black-and-white reproductions.

Compiled by one of the compilers of the first edition (1978), the second edition is an expansion of its predecessor. The materials cited remain almost all in English, but the number of artists has been increased from 161 to 185, and additional biographical references are provided for artists carried over from the earlier edition. The chronological range is from late Middle Ages through twentieth-century artists born before 1930, including painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers, and craftswomen. Architects have been dropped from this edition. In all, 29 artists appear for the first time.

The arrangement is the same as the first edition. Preceding the artist entries is a section on general works (biographical dictionaries, bibliographies, dissertations, etc.) grouped as books (including microfilm and slide sets), periodicals, and catalogs. A majority of the entries have brief descriptive annotations. The main part of the book, which contains entries for individual artists, is divided by century. Under the appropriate century, artists are entered alphabetically, each with a brief biographical sketch preceding the citations of information sources. Most entries list public collections where the artist's work can be seen. A six-page bibliography of books and periodicals on needlepoint follows the entries for individual artists. An insert of black-and-white art reproductions contains some new works.

The second edition of Women Artists merits the same comment the Board made about the first edition. It "will be useful in libraries where readers are deeply interested in art history or in feminist studies." Small libraries owning the first edition will have to decide whether acquisition of the second edition is vital to their users.

Sherry Piland (BA, Drury College, Springfield, MO; MA, art history, University of Missouri-Kansas City: Ph.D. in progress, art history, Florida State) has been an architectural historian for the Kansas City Landmarks Commission and for the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and is presently with Florida's Bureau of Historic Preservation. She is the co-author, with Ellen Uguccioni, of Foundations of Kansas City: A History and a Love Affair (1985), has taught art history and humanities courses at several colleges and universities, and has published articles in professional journals.

Covering Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Florida, SeaWorld, and--and "a welcome getaway from the concrete of Walt Disney and environs"--Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, this affortable paperback highlights a host of money-saving suggestions. You'll find everything from super car rental deals and money-saving airline strategies to discount shopping and sleeping & eating for less.
Other outstanding sections in the guide include a Central Florida Calendar, which lists the crowd levels and climate conditions at the parks month-by-month; the Best Day to go to the various parks and attractions; and up to $2,500 in discount tickets in the back of the book.
The index can be confusing and the illustrations are routine. But if you're planning a trip to any of the above attractions, you will definitely want to purchase "Econoguide '99."

DON'T TRUST SOME OF THE COUPONS IN THE BACK.

I found the book to very informative and accurate. It was written in an entertaining style. For carrying it around Disney I would recommended a smaller version. I tried to use the Best Western, Kissimmee coupon in the back of the book and they wouldn't honor it at all. In fact they laughed

In Prisoner of Her Past, Howard Reich has written a moving memoir about growing up as the child of Holocaust survivors and finding refuge from silence and fear in the world of jazz. In addition to covering jazz, blues, gospel, and world music for the Tribune, he has authored several investigative reports that have been featured on ABC’s Nightline and various National Public Radio programs. He is the author of three other books: The First and Final Nightmare of Sonia Reich: A Son’s Memoir (2006); Jelly’s Blues: The Life, Music, and Redemption of Jelly Roll Morton (2003), written with William Gaines; and Van Cliburn (1993). He most recently wrote, produced, and narrated a documentary film about his mother’s unspoken Holocaust childhood, Prisoner of Her Past. Reich graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Music.

About a brave woman

This book is very well written and informative. I didn't know that post traumatic stress disorder could appear many years after the trauma, while at first the person appears to function just fine. But the same book is published under a different title and I bought both not knowing that.

An extraordinary book.

This is a beautiful and important book that I cannot recommend too highly, and that I will not forget: “Prisoner of Her Past,” Howard Reich’s family memoir of growing up in Chicago with parents who had survived the Holocaust, and of his Mother’s late-life struggle with late-onset Post Traumatic Stress Disorder resulting from her unfathomably brutal childhood experiences. It is an extraordinarily loving and humane look at his Mother’s life and a clear-eyed look at her disease — in a way, the diametrical opposite of dementia — which is characterized by extreme awareness of her surroundings (a survival mechanism from her childhood), coupled with paranoid delusions that people want to kill her. As she aged and her symptoms began to express themselves, Reich went to extraordinary lengths to understand his Mother’s childhood experience — something she had concealed, and would not talk about — reading the existing documents, going back to her little Polish village, talking with residents, visiting the house she grew up in, seeing the Jewish cemetery, and the places where so many perished.
Reich brings this all into the present: “Surveying the psychological wreckage of the war this many years later, I couldn’t help thinking of the children of the world today — in Iraq, Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, Afghanistan, Darfur, Liberia. Youngsters in these war-torn places are suffering experiences with too many similarities to those my mother and father endured. These children, too, typically receive scant treatment for a disorder virtually unrecognized by practicing psychiatrists…” In making a compelling case for understanding late-onset PTSD, he writes: “PTSD may be the most patient and persistent of illnesses, content to wait half a century or more to unleash its full wrath, when its victims are old, weak, and at their most vulnerable.”
He concludes his book: “Now when I look at my mother — small, frail but defiant — I’m awed by her heroism in standing up to the horrors she believes she is facing once again. At last, I know and love my mother for who she really is, a woman whose steadfastness as a child saved her life and eventually gave life to me and so many others, a hero who to this day wants nothing more than to live, and to protect the lives of those she loves.”
This is an extraordinary book.

Invaluable Resource!

Roy Kinnard's _Beasts and Behemoths_ is an honestly and earnestly written reference of the great and not-so-great dino films and more. I have found myself consulting and relying on Roy's book frequently since its purchase. _Beasts and Behemoths_ is an invaluable resource that succeeds in sparking (or re-sparking) one's desire to view the titular subjects with the wonder and enthusiasm they deserve. Who woulda thought "GORGO" was so cool!? From lesser known gems (like Paul Blaisdell's "She Creature") to the classics (Willis O'brien's "King Kong") it's all here dino fans! Certainly worth every penny!

Misleading book description

This book is a masterpiece of English literature on Italy. However the book description on Amazon is misleading. It is not about Calabria but "Old Calabria." To the ancients the area between northern Apulia (Puglia) and Calabria, and of course Calabria itself, was Calabria. The first half of the book is mostly about the area which is called Tavoliere di Puglia, which is in current-day Puglia, and parts of Basilicata (the old Lucania). Only the second half deals with current-day Calabria.

Norman Douglas's knowledge and grasp of Southern Italy is unsurpassed. I also highly recommend "Siren Land." Add to these Goethe's "Italian Journey" and you will have gained the kind of insight that no contemporary, olive-tree hugging, marketing-conscious author can ever provide.

If you enjoy books by literary travellers, you will love this one. In it a humane sensibility reveals itself in clean, meticulous prose. This is not a book about Calabria but a book about Norman Douglas in Calabria, a much more interesting topic. Read Paul Fussell's excellent essay on Douglas, "Norman Douglas's Temporary Attachments" and you will understand. In Abroad: British Literary Traveling between the Wars

An Excellent Read

This was a brilliant book and thoroughly enjoyable. At first I got it to look into the nature of the Calabrian people but soon realized it was the story of one man's interpretation of his own travels through Southern Italy in areas that may at one time have been part of Calabria. Interestingly San Giuseppe di Cupertino was mentioned in the book but he is from Le Marche, far north of Calabria if old. Still a witty and sarcastic endeavor that was fun to read.
