This collection, the most complete edition to date of Melville's extant correspondence, gives access to the life and writings of one of our finest novelists. While the letters to his family deal in a perfunctory manner with the details of everyday life, the letters written between 1846 and 1852 to Evert Duyckinck and Nathaniel Hawthorne reveal the creative and critical genius that mark Melville's best work. The letters are arranged chronologically, and each is preceded by an editorial headnote placing it in the context of Melville's career. An appendix provides historical notes and reveals the textual apparatus used in the selection and location of the texts. This work, the penultimate volume in the definitive Northwestern-Newberry edition of Melville's writings, builds upon and surpasses the Merrell R. Davis-William H. Gilman edition of The Letters of Herman Melville (Yale Univ. Pr., 1960). Highly recommended.

About the Author

Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick. His first three books gained much contemporary attention (the first, Typee, becoming a bestseller), and after a fast-blooming literary success in the late 1840s, his popularity declined precipitously in the mid-1850s and never recovered during his lifetime. When he died in 1891, he was almost completely forgotten. It was not until the "Melville Revival" in the early 20th century that his work won recognition, especially Moby-Dick, which was hailed as one of the literary masterpieces of both American and world literature. He was the first writer to have his works collected and published by the Library of America.

An invaluable work for all Melville scholars who will undoubtely find in this correspondence many insights on his art and craft. Though the letters to Hawthorne remain the most piercing contributes to his fiction, those covering the last part of Melville's life will surely prove an enlightening discovery, charting as they do the perilous journey through the life and mind of the aging author. Strongly recommended.

About the Author
A novelist, dramatist, short-story writer, and essayist, Zofia Nalkowska (1884-1954) was a leading proponent of the avant-garde of her day. A resident of Warsaw, she was an active member of the Polish PEN Club, the first female member of the Polish Academy of Literature, and the patron of a popular Warsaw literary salon. Her life in occupied Warsaw during World War II is the subject of her Wartime Diaries and Medallions.

Diana Kuprel has a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Toronto. She is a postdoctoral fellow for the Literary History Project, University of Toronto, and editor in chief of Books in Canada: The Canadian Review of Books.

Mr. Kozlovov , I feel outraged of your ignorance and denial of Holocaust. This book is a testimony of people who witnessed the horros of Holocaust and others who lived through it and survived it. Your narrow minded and uneducated way of looking at worlds biggest tragedy is truly disturbing not to say disgusting. I recommend trip to Poland to Aushwitz ASAP. Maybe after you take a look at what one nation did to the other you will open your blind eyes. I truly believe it is because of people who think like you that Holocaust even happend...

medallions- real testimonies

It is very interesting to see how uneducated and uninformed people express their ignorant opinions. For those who don't know, Zofia Nalkowska was a known political activist after WWII. She wrote the book "Medallions" on the basis on true interviews she conducted with the holocaust survivors. All the stories in her book are real. Moreover, her book "Mediallions" has been praised by many great literary figures, critics and others, for the way she wrote the book: with no author's opinions, with no subjective (her) adjectives, no beautyfing, no changes - only blank testimonies of those who saw on their own eyes and experienced on their own bodies the horrors written down in "Medallions." Trully, I believe those testimonies are more real and know more truth than some unexperienced and uneducated reader. The book is not a fiction, just as well the holocaust was not.

I don't have any doubts that there will be SOME people whose ignorance and limited knowledge about the subject concerning holocaust lead them to think about this book in terms of fiction. I hope that one day they would stop living inside the box and their thinking horizons would expand.

Still Relevant and Intelligent After all These Years

This is the best book in the Life Library of Photography series. I acquired the collection in the early 1970s, as a young teenager and budding photographer, and I have returned to it many times through the years, particularly the "Light and Film" volume. Though out of print, this book is even relevant to today's digital photography because, fundamentally, the properties of light and the capturing of images, whether on film or on digital light receptors, remains true all across Newtonian time and space. (If you get into the Einsteinian realm, you're on your own.) The book is moderately technical, but that is good, because it provides a depth that allows you to learn more with every reading. The basic lesson of the book is to see light from the film's perspective. I can't speak enough on how important that is for good, consistent, instinctual photography. The chapter on the 10-tone gray scale is the best single tool I have in my photographic arsenal. I use what I learned from that chapter EVERY DAY when I use Photo Shop to adjust the blacks, whites, and grays of my images...

Traditionally, scholars have traced the origin of Christianity to a single source—the kingdom of God as represented in the message of the historical Jesus. Through a rhetorical critical analysis of one of the most important texts in early Christian literature (the Beelzebul controversy), Michael L. Humphries addresses the issue of Christian origins, demonstrating how the language of the kingdom of God is best understood according to its locative or taxonomic effect where the demarcation of social and cultural boundaries contributes to the emergence of this new social foundation.

The Beelzebul controversy exists in two versions— Q and Mark—and thereby allows the study to engage the import of the kingdom language at the point of juxtaposition between two distinct textual representations. This makes it possible to deal directly with the issue of the disparity of texts in the synoptic tradition. Humphries suggests that these two versions of the same controversy indicate two distinct social trajectories wherein the kingdom of God comes to mean something quite different in each case but that nevertheless they demonstrate a similarity in theoretical effect where the language contributes to the emergence of relatively distinct social formations.

Humphries establishes the Q and Markan versions of the Beelzebul controversy as relatively sophisticated compositions that are formally identified as elaborate chreiai (a literary form used in the teaching of rhetoric at the secondary and post-secondary level of GrecoRoman education) and that offer an excellent example of the rhetorical manipulation of language in the development of social and cultural identity.

A Juicy Piece of the Puzzle

As a writer and amateur historian who researches and writes on topics of religion, and not being a trained scholar who is able to translate texts for myself, I rely on books such as this one to give me the tools to ply my trade. This is a particularly juicy one since the Beelzebul Controversy has always struck me as a key component to understanding just what the heck was going on back then.

In my opinion, based on wide reading, there's a real possibility that the "god" that "Jesus" was talking about in terms of the "heavenly father" and the "kingdom of god" may very well have been "Beelzebul" and not Yahweh. It seems clear from reading the works of Burton Mack: A MYTH OF INNOCENCE (Foundations & Facets Series)", the The Lost Gospel: The Book of Q and Christian Origins, Who Wrote the New Testament?: The Making of the Christian Myth, etc., as well as the works of other biblical scholars and historians of religion, such as Thomas L. Thompson, Phillip Davies, John van Seters, Giovanni Garbini, Niels Peter Lemche, and others, that Jesus very probably was not a Jew at all and it was only Jewish Christians who sought to cast him in that role to underwrite their "Synagogue reform" intentions, to indemnify themselves against the charge of following after "foreign gods."

In "Christian Origins and the Language of the Kingdom of God," Michael L. Humphries analyzes the "Beelzebul controversy" and draws some fascinating conclusions, though he doesn't go as far as I have in the above statement. It was only while reading his analysis that it occurred to me that it was obvious that the god of the real "Jesus" WAS Beelzebul.

This book is a very good explication of the problem of the Beelzebul Controversy and the argument is generally well presented and well-reasoned. I would recommend this book also to a general, non-expert reader for some very good background on biblical texts and how they are studied by scholars.
