Calhoun, among other slavery apologists. While on the surface this seems like nothing new, it proves to be quite revelatory. Wieck attributed Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to his understanding of New England minister and abolitionist Theodore Parker and Wills presents the Gettysburg Address as an American version of Pericles's Funeral Oration, but Elmore digs deep into the religious context of the time and fleshes out more completely here than other writers Lincoln's wealth of understanding of the Bible. To read this book is to cast aside all images of Lincoln as an infidel, an accusation he lived with, but rather to see a man so attuned to phrase, meter, and pace of ele­ments of the Bible that he is able to take scripture, apply it to the narrative of American history, and elevate his rhetoric to a place that few subsequent American presidents have been able to do. [....] At work here as a writer, Elmore, a professor of law, builds his case for his argument much in the way Lincoln would for a client. In a country where 80% of its citizens between the third grade and Medicare are fans of NASCAR or rap music, is there a place for a book on the Gettysburg Address and the King James Bible? Let's hope so. But such a project may have tough going. Fifty percent of high school diploma holders never read another book after graduation day, eighty percent of Sunday pulpiteers no longer read from the King James Bible and the name Shakespeare is best known for fishing tackle. Many coaches after a lost game say "It's time to get back to the basics." Maybe it's time for our culture to do the same. A.E. Elmore's book is as good a place as any to start. The author claims that the Gettysburg Address is history's greatest speech, Shakespeare is history's greatest writer and the King James Bible is God's greatest gift to mankind. Bold assertion. Like many decorated Southern writers Mr. Elmore began his college days at Swanee but he may be the first of this esteemed fraternity to give such deference to The Good Book. His efforts to find relationships among such important subjects certainly imply unusual creativity and his 130,000 words reflect profound study. There are too many well made points to discuss in a simple book review but it must be confirmed as to the importance of his blend of historical facts and his demonstrations of the grandeur of the English language. In 1938, at the age of 24, George Speaight left his job as a bookseller and went to work as a farmhand at Pigotts, the family settlement of Eric Gill and his group of artist-craftsworkers in Buckinghamshire. While there, Speaight decided to write a history of Punch and Judy. The project grew, and during the Second World War he spent his nights working in the Auxiliary Fire Service and his days at the British Museum Reading Room researching Punch and puppets. This book is the result of all his research.

George Speaight wrote several books. Among them were:THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH PUPPET THEATER. Another one: THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH TOY THEATER. Somehow, the reviewer mixed the wrong title with the wrong book. However, both books are excellent resources for their subject matter, interesting and highly informative.Anyone wanting to research either of these subjects areas should read them.They are the bibles in their field. Highly indexed- with extensive bibliographies and fine historical illustrations and photographs they are first rate books.

A FABULOUS READ!

I know this author very well, and this purchase was actually to replace an "Author's Copy" that had worn out. THAT'S how good Greg Mank's writing is. He actually talked to many of our favourite actors and actresses....doing "CCA's" for the magazine FILMS IN REVIEW.

I've learned much from Greg's Writings: Tenacity, editing. and the flavour of the written word. I've also learned the joy of finding hitherto unknown information: Found by "Seat of the Pants" research: That patience that keeps you reading 100 year old newspapers on microfilm for several hours a day.

THAT is what makes Greg Mank's books such a delight. The joy of writing, and the enthusiasm in every word.....as well as the pleasure of "meeting" actors you've always admired.

A Book to Heal the Human Spirit

If you are caring for aged parents, you should run right out and buy this wonderful little book. It deals with that time when our situation with parents is reversed, when the child becomes the caregiver, the supervisor, the shepherd charged with guiding those who brought us in the front door of this life out its back door. This can be a momentous time, when responsibility can hang almost too heavy. But it can also be a time of joy and healing. Goldberg and Kendall have put together a collection of meditations on old age and caregiving that show how to turn the frustrations, exhaustions, and traumas of caring for old parents into a time of spiritual enrichment. Like Goldberg's Room to Write and The Spirit of Pregnancy, Gifts from the Heart is a book to keep beside the bed, a book to be dipped into and savored. It will restore your spirit when you are exhausted by duties and demands, and encourage you to look beyond the day-to-day to the beauties and revelations that can heal divisions between child and parent and bring about a final separation that rises toward transcendence. This is not a how-to book, although it abounds with practical suggestions. Rather, it is a series of parables, simple on the surface, but full of depths and comfort. It is a book to heal the human spirit.

This book was a lot more than help for people with sick parents or people who's parents live with them. It shows how to enrich one's relationship to one's parents in their elder years,and how to gain insight into one's own life and aging process through frequent or occassional interaction with one's parents.

This is a great book for those caring for their elderly. It is easy to read, each reflection is just a paragraph or two and filled with personal experiences, funny, serious, dramatic, that you will definitely relate to if you take care of older people. I would recommend it as a book of encouragement for those involved in elder care.

Marszalek traces the sixteenth president’s evolution from a nonmilitary politician into the commander in chief who won the Civil War, demonstrating why Lincoln remains America’s greatest military president.

As tensions erupted into conflict in 1861, Lincoln turned to his generals, including Winfield Scott, George B. McClellan, and Henry W. Halleck, for guidance in running the war. These men were products of the traditional philosophy of war, which taught that armies alone wage war and the way to win was to maneuver masses of forces against fractions of the enemy at the key point in the strategic area. As Marszalek shows, Lincoln listened at first, and made mistakes along the way, but he increasingly came to realize that these military men should no longer direct him. He developed a different philosophy of war, one that advocated attacks on all parts of the enemy line and war between not just armies but also societies. Warfare had changed, and now the generals had to learn from their commander in chief. It was only when Ulysses S. Grant became commanding general, Marszalek explains, that Lincoln had a leader who agreed with his approach to war. Implementation of this new philosophy, he shows, won the war for the Union forces.

Tying the necessity of emancipation to preservation of the Union, Marszalek considers the many presidential matters Lincoln had to face in order to manage the war effectively and demonstrates how Lincoln’s determination, humility, sense of humor, analytical ability, and knack for quickly learning important information proved instrumental in his military success. Based primarily on Lincoln’s own words, this succinct volume offers an easily-accessible window into a critical period in the life of Abraham Lincoln and the history of the nation.
