Important Text on History of Animated TV Specials

When it comes to those valuable "treasures" we so cherish, the terms "a genie's three wishes", "desert island", "top ten list", etc. are always quoted. More important than fame, power, or money, we all have a sentimental feeling when it comes to our first kiss, our childhood home, certain toys or books or games we remember (or may still own) that carry special memories with them, or special moments and occasions from the past with family and/or friends. Many of us, before and during our grade school years, were fortunate enough to be swept up and taken to another place, from just the turn of a television dial.
More important than Saturday morning cartoons or even 'The Wonderful World of Disney' ('... of Color', for those before 1968), were the rare TV specials, the second best thing to a Disney film being brought back to the local theatre (these were the days before home video and dvd). Many of us, from all ages, have seen the Christmas specials of Rankin-Bass company's animatronic 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' & 'Santa Claus is Comin' to Town', their 'Frosty the Snowman', Chuck Jones' 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', & Lee Mendelson & Charles Schulz's 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'.
However, there were also Australia A.P.I.'s 'Famous Classic Tales' series, from the early 70s, on classic stories like 'Robin Hood' & 'The Count of Monte Cristo'; Chuck Jones' 'Horton Hears a Who!'; Richard Williams' creative - but too short - version of 'A Christmas Carol', with the voice of Alistair Sim (who'd portrayed Scrooge in the classic 1951 British film); and Chuck Jones' Rudyard Kipling trilogy from the mid 1970s: 'The White Seal', 'Rikki Tiki Tavi', & 'Mowgli's Brothers'. For a long time, I've looked for such a text - and now found it, one of the only true logs of television's animated specials, encompassing the period of 1962-87. If this sounds of interest to you, it will probably be worth your acquiring. However, be aware, the author does not include much on sponsors (like Dolly Madison, who'd sponsored the Peanuts specials through the 1970s) or information on the specific debut of classic presentations and what went into the making of them.
This is just a basic overview of what appears to be all the animated specials from the first twenty five years. Being a child of the 70s, these memories are some of my dearest. Perhaps, not so dear as family holidays or special memories of friends, but I think the reason why tv and film tend to be so well loved is that, if we're lucky, we can find some of these and have the chance to at least relive that moment. I married a much younger woman and now she has touched on a part of my past, which she also enjoys.
One additional note (12/15/11): under the title "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", Orson Welles is credited as Rikki (the mongoose) and Shepard Menken is Nag and Chuchundra. This is a typo and the credits are reverse. Besides the two character voices, Welles was also memorably the narrator of this short.

Artfully complete beginners guide

This book is a how to guide that explains the fundamentals of wood turning. From the decision to start, through setting up, safety, selecting tools, wood, and basic wood turning techniques. The authors have gone to great lengths to give the beginner, like me, sufficient information to get started. Even the spiral binding is a thoughtful touch that allows the pages to stay open, a real handy feature when you are trying to grind a bevel of turn your first square stick into a reasonably round piece of wood.
Illustrations and pictures adorn every page giving visual meaning to the text. Maybe that is not the proper order, maybe I should say that the pictures and illustrations explain the text to the point that I was comfortable with my understanding of what the author was trying to explain and not afraid to try the operation or technique. Grinding a new profile on a brand-new Sorby tools could be an expensive mistake, but I did it and it works just fine.
The book is an excellent tool. It explains fundamentals. It does go into several simple projects, but the real value is in the basic fundamental information that a beginner needs to get started spinning wood and having fun. I also found that unlike other books on this subject, the authors did not seem to convey their personal prejudices for various pieces of equipment. This was refreshing, of course, it also doesn't give me any one to blame if I buy the wrong thing.
This is a Time life book, with a 1995 publishing date and I know that there have been advances in tools and equipment, however, woodturning started many years ago probably with a stick and a string and a sharp rock. So take the information put forth and seek other sources to determine what is the latest and greatest.
In the past month I have visited our local library multiple times, reviewing various books on wood turning and this is one that I will buy. Where others good? Yes, and I have already purchased one, but that was before I found this book, which will complete the information in the book that I have already purchased.

Great book for beginners.

This book has most if not all the basics to get started turning. It talks of the tools needed, how and when to sharpen the chisels, the various centers and chucks. If you wish to get started and need a guide, read this book carefully and you'll learn so much. It is a great reference for the experienced wood turner.

Spain’s policy was aimed at frustrating German designs, which made it, in effect, pro-Allied. Yet for survival Franco had to maintain an overt attitude of friendship with the Axis as well as a posture of enmity toward Russia. This friendship that Franco, his aides, and the controlled media professed for Hitler provided Spain’s sole defense against German invasion.

 

Once Spanish policy became clear, the Allied poli­cy was to be as helpful as possible. Spain was starving, weary of war, divided politically and spiritually. The United States and Britain chose not to punish Spain for her avowed friendship with the Axis but instead to make it as easy as possible for Franco to stay out of the war. Both countries continued to trade with Spain and supply her with com­modities that would enable her to survive. That the Allies and the Spanish were able to carry out a policy that was often unpopular and difficult constitutes a great diplomatic victory— one that may have altered the course of World War II.

About the Author
Kathleen Deignan, C.N.D., is a sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame, a theologian, and a composer of sacred song who has been engaged in liturgical musicianship for many years. She received her master s degree in spirituality studies and her doctorate in historical theology from Fordham University in New York, where she studied with her mentor, the late geologian, Father Thomas Berry, one of the great inspirations of her life and ministry. As a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame, Deignan is engaged in the mission of liberating education at Iona College where she is professor of religious studies. As part of her collaboration with the Congregation of Christian Brothers and colleagues, she founded and directs the Iona Spirituality Institute, a project for the celebration and study of the spiritual life, which has sponsored her work in interfaith dialogue, peace and justice studies, and spiritual animation in the United States and abroad, particularly in Ireland where she has worked to foster the wisdom legacy of Thomas Merton. In October 2009, she received Fordham University s Doctrina et Sapientia Award for her work in spirituality. In addition to her books. Deignan has written many articles that have appeared in The Way, Review for Religious, Sisters Today, Franciscan Review, Diakonia, Sacred Journey, and Monastic Interreligious Dialogue Bulletin.

Rosemary Radford Ruether is Professor Emerita of Theology at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. She is the author of many books on feminism and Christianity.

one of a large collection of books

i collected these about 20 years ago and at the time i skipped the fish one, ( i also skipped the fancy meats like pigs feet and brains!!) Fish wasn't big back then and it is a huge part of our diet now. even though this book is old it is still a great book. I spent 20-25 for each book and now you can get them for less then 1.00 What a deal, if i didn't have them all now i would get them all!!

This is a very complete cookbook, it shows every way imaginable to cook fish. Shows all the basic recipes too. the only other cookbook i consider even close to this in quality is The Joy of Cooking
