This three-part collection of diverse and provocative essays addresses the dominant questions and controversies the genre poses.

Defining and examining the rationale of docudrama, the nine essayists in the first part discuss the history and development of docudrama on TV and in film; they also consider the place of truth in docudrama, the main critiques of the form, and the audience's susceptibilities and expectations. In investigating the actual filmmaking process, the eight essays in the second part focus on how "docudrama as a 'commodity' is created in the United States and England." Part essay, part case study, and part interview, this section also explores how Hollywood and the commercial networks as well as producers and writers work and think. The final part presents an in-depth critique of a number of controversial docudramas that have helped form and shape public opinion, including Battleship Potemkin, Roots, Reds, JFK, Mississippi Burning, Schindler's List, and In the Name of the Father.

The frequent criticism of its potential to misguide audiences by erecting a fictional structure around historical events is well examined in this collection of nearly 30 probing essays by a well-credentialed mix of contributors from the entertainment industry and academia. What emerges from these analyses of such landmark TV and cinema docudramas as Roots, Patriot Games, and Schindler's List is the value of reaching a wider audience for important historical topics than would be achieved by conventional documentaries. Also explored are the ethical issues involved in controversial fictionalizations, such as Oliver Stone's JFK. Using this methodology, Bermel provides new interpretations of Molière’s most celebrated plays and demonstrates that many of the less famous plays also deserve attention.

Previous Molière critics have been conservative, especially in that they favor traditional stagings; Bermel, however, encourages new explorations of the plays. His main intention is to keep Molière alive and vital for present and future readers and audiences. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his attention to, and sympathy for, female characters and their points of view.

About the Author

Albert Bermel is Professor of Theatre at Lehman College and the Graduate Center of CUNY and Chairman of the Speech and Theatre Department at Lehman College. A playwright and theatre scholar with 11 other books to his credit, Bermel has published translations of 13 Molière plays, including The Miser, which was directed by Andrei Serban at the American Repertory Theatre.

Purple Parrots Eating Carrots

This book is by far my grandaughters (now 5 and 4) favorite. I bought this book when the oldest was 2 1/2 and over and over again this is the book they take to bed to "read" by themselves. The combination of pictures and the rhyming has made this an easy book for them to be challenged to begin getting the idea of reading. Highly recommend!

In a recent article in Reference Services Review, Eleanor Block, head of Ohio State's Journalism Library, points out that the experts do not agree on dates for the golden age of radio. She adopts as a definition, "from the beginnings of broadcasting through 1960." More importantly, she critiques the three radio reference books (now out of print) that old-time radio (OTR) buffs have found most useful: Buxton and Owen's The Big Broadcast, 1920-1950 (Viking, 1972), Dunning's Tune in Yesterday: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio, 1925-1976 (Prentice-Hall, 1976), and Terrace's Radio's Golden Years: The Encyclopedia of Radio Programs 1930-1960 (A. S. Barnes, 1981). Buxton and Owen is particularly useful for its inclusion of information about producers, directors, writers, and music directors and its photographs of performers. Dunning includes only dramatic, comedy, and variety programs and provides extensive critical comments as well as photos of performers. Terrace is useful for its inclusion of sponsor name, announcer's opening lines, and nearly 100 photographs.

The range of material covered by the Handbook of Old-Time Radio--capitalizing on more than 12 years of research, including using the NBC archives at the Library of Congress--means that this volume supplements (but does not supplant) the three titles previously cited. This volume covers from 1926 (when NBC was incorporated) to 1962. It consists of three parts. The first, a brief history of networks and broadcasting, is unique--nothing like it is found in the other three books. Part 2, a unique tabulation, consists of category logs listing more than 4,500 programs organized by program type (e.g., comedy, soap operas, quiz and audience participation, news, sports, religious, and, unique to this volume, armed forces and foreign broadcasting). Each category log is arranged in three columns: program title, network, and number of episodes available. The third part, "Program Descriptive Log," briefly describes more than 2,000 of the better-known programs, providing for each such information as the year of first and last show, performers, length of program, and story line. The handbook concludes with directory information (public collections, OTR fan clubs, dealers); a selected, annotated bibliography; a performer/name index; and a program index.

These four sources differ in the amount and variety of information given and its presentation, as examination of them for their treatment of such favorites as "Fibber McGee and Molly" and "Bell Telephone Hour" will quickly show. Public and academic libraries and old-time radio buffs will enrich their radio-history collections with the comprehensive Handbook of Old-Time Radio.

Robert C. Reinehr is Emeritus Professor of Psychology, Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, where he taught from 1981 until his retirement in 1999.

Jon D. Swartz was Chief of Psychological Services, Central Counties Center for Mental Health-Mental Retardation, Temple, Texas, from 1990 until his retirement in 1999.

Reinehr and Swartz are the co-authors of Historical Dictionary of Old Time Radio (Scarecrow Press, 2008).

An Undiscovered Treasure

OTR fans don't skip over this book! While not as detailed in specifics as Dunning's this book covers a wider range of programs including foreign versions of US show & US airings of foreign broadcasts. It also has a long section listing shows by catagory. You will find quite a few shows that aren't listing elsewhere and if details are lacking its generally because they just don't exist. All in all an excellent reference.

This book has attained, among really hardcore OTR researchers and OTR fans, a truly vaunted status.
I had always wanted a copy and finally attained an affordable used edition.

When this book was written in 1993, the apparent OTR scenario was that OTR programs were much more rare and therefore difficult to obtain; thus the focus of the book, in a myriad of forms are "lists" with VERY cursory details about cast, broadcast dates, networks etc. as well as lists of collectors and other links.

Thus this book has considerable width with very little depth. Other encyclopedias of OTR such as those authored by John Dunning and Leonard Maltin etc. are far more in depth and not nearly as dry and truncated.

In 1913, the year before he died, Charles J. Hoflund dictated his life story to his grandson, Stanley Hoflund High. That story is presented here for the first time in its entirety by H. Arnold Barton.

Hoflund was born in Djursdala Parish, Sweden, in 1834, and emigrated to America with his family in 1850. His life is highly representative of those of most Swedish immigrants during the earliest phase of their great exodus to America. Unlike other immigrants who recorded their recollections, Hoflund provides a wealth of fascinating detail about life in his home parish before he departed for America.

He gives a vivid account of the long, harrowing journey to America during the sailing ship era and describes the early days in the original Swedish "core" settlements around Andover in Henry County, Illinois. Opportunities came fast on the frontier—the day after the family’s arrival at Andover, Charles was hired to work for a nearby Yankee farmer, allowing him to earn his keep and contribute to his family’s depleted assets. Hoflund sought opportunity wherever he could find it. About the Author

H. Arnold Barton is Professor of History at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is descended from immigrants from Djursdala, where his paternal great-grandfather’s family sat in the third pew of the same church attended by the Hoflund family.
