About the Author
Rosemary Sutcliff was born in 1920 in West Clanden, Surrey. With over 50 books to her credit, Rosemary Sutcliff is now universally considered one of the finest writers of historical novels for children. Her first novel, The Queen Elizabeth Story was published in 1950. In 1959 her book The Lantern Bearers won the Carnegie Medal. In 1974 she was highly commended for the Hans Christian Andersen Award and in 1978 her book, Song for a Dark Queen was commended for the Other Award. In 1975, Rosemary was awarded the OBE for services to Children's Literature and the CBE in 1992. Unfortunately Rosemary passed away in July 1992 and is much missed by her many fans.

Rare and Underrated

Knight's Fee is one of the four or five books I've read in my life which alway make me cry. Though written for children, it's completely unpatronising, always crediting the reader with intelligence and imagination, and is beautifully written. It tells the story of Randal, a half-Saxon half-Breton lad in Norman England, an orphan left to fend for himself as a dog-boy in Arundel castle, and details his gradual rise to knighthood and freedom, at a terrible price. I have only ever seen this book in hardback, in an Oxford Childrens Library edition, never in paperback, which is a great pity, as it is a vastly underrated book by this author, far better I think than her more well-known stories of Roman Britain, and deserves to be much more widely read.

Rosemary Sutcliff loves Old England; we have learned so much from her of the Romans and the ancient Bretons. In Knight's Fee we experience the reign of one of William the Conqueror's sons, as well as the mingling of Norman and Saxon, until, as one character muses, during the new century there will no longer be Norman and Saxon, but only English. Young Randal is rescued from a cruel lord and so grows up on Dean, a manor held by dAguillon, a wise and kind knight. As the years go by, and the people on the manor are affected by the turmoil in London, Randal grows, struggles, of course, and is able to participate in and have a great effect upon lives that depend upon him. Sutcliff's characters are so compelling, and her descriptions of the English countryside so filled with her love of the land that sometimes her books read like poetry. There's plenty of action, though, as Randal and his foster-brother Bevis are drawn into the conflicts of William's heirs.

A remarkable military memoir

"Spain's Cause Was Mine: A Memoir of an American Medic in the Spanish Civil War," by Hank Rubin, is a well-written and enlightening narrative. A large chunk of the book details the long odyssey that took him from Los Angeles and through France enroute to service in Spain--a quest taken in defiance of an international non-intervention pact. This section of the book is a real adventure story with an almost dystopian flavor.

Equally fascinating is the portion of the book detailing his actual time with the Spanish army, during which he served in a machine gun squad and as a medical laboratory technician. Rubin explores the unique challenges in putting together a multinational, multiethnic, and multilingual fighting force. He details the illness, discomfort, and deprivations that the troops endured in order to uphold their ideals.

In addition to covering such down-to-earth issues as mail call and footgear, Rubin also offers some potent reflections on wartime morality and medical ethics. Particularly interesting are his thoughts on the impact of his Jewish identity on his decision to enlist. His writing style is largely straightforward, but graced with occasional passages of great beauty and power.

Rubin's narrative really educated me about the unique place of Spanish Civil War veterans in the United States. This book is a valuable and enjoyable addition to the canon of American military memoirs.

Price for libraries it should be available for all in a less expensive edition! There are some areas needing work, for example the last weekend in June lists Chicago's Gay Pride march (the hometown of the publisher and compilers of the book) but doesn't mention New York and San Francisco which celebrate Gay & Lesbian Pride Days at the same time

This book is amazing lots of patterns to follow. Patterns old type victorian woolwork and beadwork in black and white but then shown in colour with the colour symbols. These are 19 centuary patterns and designs and shows the victorian women in their costumes and the embroideries that adorned the rooms. I would recommend this book so much to read this is a best buy at a good price as these patterns are hard to find. And this book is a must for anyone who likes the victorian era.IT exceeded my expectations.

About the Author

Rosemarie Tichler was casting director and artistic producer at the Public Theater (New York). She teaches in New York University’s Graduate Acting Program. She is the recipient of the Casting Society of America’s Apple Award, the Villager Award for Excellence in Casting, and two Tony Award Producing nominations. Tichler founded the Public Theater’s Shakespeare Lab, now in its sixteenth year. She is on the board of directors of New York’s Classic Stage Company. She is the coauthor, with Barry Jay Kaplan, of Actors at Work. 

Barry Jay Kaplan’s plays include Landscape of Desire. He is the recipient of the Joe Callaway Award and the Whitfield Cooke Best Play Award. He is also the author of the best-selling novels Black Orchid (with Nicholas Meyer) and Biscayne. His short stories have been nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize. He is the coauthor, with Rosemarie Tichler, of Actors at Work.

These discourses, the authors assert, point to the SBC leaders’ call for a return to times before feminism and tolerance of varying sexual orientations allegedly brought chaos to society and shook believers from their theological foundations.

About the Author

Carl L. Kell is a professor in the Department of Communication, Western Kentucky University, where he teaches rhetorical history and persuasion in American popular culture. 

 

L. Raymond Camp is a professor emeritus of communication at North Carolina State University. He is the author of Roger Williams: God's Apostle of Advocacy and the editor of Persuasion in the Public Forum: Pulpit, Bar, and Council.

Wonderfully Woven Tale of Truth

If you're interested or have ever lived in the South, and been a Baptist, which most southerners are, then READ THIS BOOK! It's a wonderfully woven tale of truth that pulls you into it. I loved the passages of Sunday in the South. So very true.

About the Author
Wheeler Winston Dixon is the James Ryan Professor of Film Studies, Coordinator of the Film Studies Program, Professor of English at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and, with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster, editor of the new book series Quick Takes: Movies and Popular Culture for Rutgers University Press.

His recent books include Black & White Cinema: A Short History (2015); Streaming: Movies, Media and Instant Access (2013); Death of the Moguls: The End of Classical Hollywood (2012); 21st Century Hollywood: Movies in the Era of Transformation (2011, co-authored with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster); A History of Horror (2010); and Film Noir and the Cinema of Paranoia (2009).

Dixon's book A Short History of Film (2008, co-authored with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster) was reprinted six times through 2012. A second, revised edition was published in 2013; the book is a required text in universities throughout the world.

A short but very enjoyable visit with a battle-tested Hollywood veteran. 5 stars for Fraser, 3 stars for the presentation.

Director Harry Fraser never thought of writing his memoirs because he thought nobody would want to read them. Happily, a B-Western fan gave then-octogenarian Fraser a tape recorder, so Fraser dictated his many memories for later transcription.

Harry Fraser was one of a select few silent-film hands (like William Beaudine, Elmer Clifton, Christy Cabanne, and Lambert Hillyer) who were considered "washed up" as A-list directors by the 1940s, but whose efficiency and professionalism guaranteed steady employment by low-budget producers. Fraser has dozens and dozens of features and serials to his credit, all made on the cheap, and he was always under enormous pressure to film as much as possible over a matter of days. And he enjoyed every minute of it, as you will discover in his chatty, anecdotal style.

Fraser has a wealth of show-business stories, from an early engagement as a whorehouse pianist to a George M. Cohan-produced musical comedy (in which Fraser appeared as Suzaretta, a Mexican señorita!). He opens the book with favorite stories of western actors he has known, then recalls his theatrical exploits, and then talks about his days on the B-movie assembly line. Fraser was sometimes called upon by desperate producers to complete a troubled shoot, or to write and produce in addition to directing. Fraser paints a vivid picture of the hectic, hurried conditions that were a way of life in the smaller studios. "In the Hollywood of those days," he recalled, "your crew worked together as a steamroller. If anything or anybody got in their way, they gave it a shove. You pushed them. They pushed you. And one way or another, they would always make up lost time." The book is filled with close shaves and narrow victories, as Fraser and his crews contend with desert locations in the middle of nowhere, wild animals, reckless stuntmen, nervous producers, absent box lunches, fast-buck exploitation opportunities, and other nuisances that were part and parcel of B-movie production. (Fraser's memory was sometimes faulty about details, so the heroine of Fraser's serial "Jungle Menace" is identified as Betty Bronson instead of Charlotte Henry. Fraser also tried to compile his filmography late in life, which was a challenge since he did remedial work on many projects without credit.)

Fraser's voice is heard in only 105 pages. Editor Wheeler W. Dixon prefaces the Fraser text with an academic, 36-page essay in which he summarizes, in scrupulous alphabetical order, the works and abilities of 41 B-Western directors -- which is interesting, but doesn't include any comparable estimation of Harry Fraser or Fraser's films! (This is rather appropriate, much like movie producers of the old days needing to coax a short feature up to a respectable length by adding extra material!) Dixon also makes occasional errors in transcribing Fraser's spoken accounts, so drama critic George Jean Nathan is cited as "George G. Nathan," actress Betty Compson is misheard as "Compton," ingenue Dorothy Gulliver is presented as "Gilabor," maestro Louis Silvers is called "Lou Silver." However, editor Dixon deserves credit for polishing and organizing the transcribed remarks, preserving the natural voice of Harry Fraser. Fraser's widow, Audrey Brown Fraser, contributed many rare photographs, which complement the text.

Fans of B-Westerns and B-movies in general will enjoy this unusual book. This writer enjoyed his visit with Harry Fraser so much that he went right back to the beginning and read the Fraser story again.
