Preparation for the GED can be difficult and scary, but this text is written and presented in such a way the students will feel more confident. All areas of the test are covered thoroughly without being burdensome. The text also covers all skill levels within each subject. One concern might be the expectation that the student has the reading level necessary for comprehending the explanations, I would suggest some information being provided in the introduction about a minimum reading level needed to use this text.

Unbelievable True Story

Almost thirty years before the Civil War, a group of college seminary students turned America upside down. This is the unbelievable true story of southern gentlemen who grew up on the plantation then chose to rebel against their families, culture and society to become hardcore abolitionists.

They were young men who wanted to devote their lives to serving God in the ministry. They left their home towns to attend a Seminary in Ohio. Theodore Weld was waiting for them. He had enrolled in the seminary just to invite them to a two week long nightly debate on slavery. Everyone was invited to bring their own opinion. By the end of the debate, these southern gentleman shook off everything they had been conditioned to believe and vowed to "elevate" the African American community. Then they partnered with the African American community to attack the system of slavery. Its hard for us to understand the incredible opposition they faced. The city of Cincinnati began to riot over this. Yet the students still did everything from create free schools to run the Underground Railroad. And they began to preach abolition across America. Nothing stopped them, not even riots, beatings, tar and featherings, and other violence. This is a powerful story of how hearts can change under the power of the Holy Spirit. However it is written in a scholarly format which might be more like a textbook than pure entertainment. The text could use a little more graphic design to be more visually appealing. But the author did an excellent job of researching this powerful story of American history. If you've ever wanted to hear about how a revival can change a nation--read this and how the story continues in "Arguing About Slavery" and Gilbert Barnes book "The Anti-Slavery Impulse."

The breakaway of Betterton and some of the older actors from Drury Lane in 1695, the flood of new plays at the turn of the century, the rivalry between the new acting company at Lincoln’s Inn Fields and Drury Lane, and the result­ing competition for the playgoers’ atten­tion spawned an extravaganza of singers, jugglers, animal acts, and double bills. Despite great difficulties, Milhous shows, Betterton was able to bring about an accommodation that permitted the two acting companies to enjoy a period of modest prosperity and to exert a continuing influence on English drama and the organization of theatrical production.

 

This careful study of shifts, devices, and the fortunes of the years of rivalry between acting companies provides stu­dents of English theatre history and dra­ma with invaluable new insights into the practical factors that influenced the history of drama.

Must Have For the TV Video Collector

I purchased the first two books way back when they first came out (1959-1975 and 1975-1980) and I have found these two books to be more valuable in the age of TV Programs on DVD because they list not only the titles of programs, but the actors. And the order of episodes is especially helpful if you are recording rare TV shows.

I didn't know the author had more books out after 1980. I'm definitely interested because this author is very thorough and his books are a must have for anyone interested in early TV.

An amazing piece of work.

This is THE reference for anyone, professional or amateur, who is writing an episode guide or just wants to have a list of the episodes of a given drama in airdate order. An invaluable resource, as shown by the number of Web-based episode guides that cite one or all of these volumes as references. For most TV series, Gianakos also critiques certain episodes, and puts the shows into the context of their time. The 1959-75 volume is my personal favorite, capturing the era I believe to have been TV's best. This is an inexplicably underrated series of books.

Informed by reader-response and reception theory and literacy and cultural studies, Johnson’s ambitious examination of these two ostensibly literary texts charts the cultural roles they played in the centuries following their composition, roles far more important than their modern critical reputations can explain.

Johnson argues that much more evidence exists about how earlier readers read than has hitherto been acknowledged. The reception of Piers Plowman, for example, can be inferred from references to the work, the apparatus its Renaissance printer inserted in his editions, the marginal comments readers inscribed both in printed editions and in manuscripts, and the apocryphal "plowman" texts that constitute interpretations of Langland’s poem. She demonstrates by example that what is culturally transmitted has not been just the work itself; it includes vestiges of past readers’ encounters with the text that are traceable both in the way a text is presented as well as in the way that presentation is received.

By understanding this tradition, Bunyan’s place in it, and the way the reception of The Pilgrim’s Progress illustrates the beginning of a new, more realistic fictional tradition, Johnson concludes, we can begin to delineate a more accurate history of the ways literature and society intersect, a history of readers reading.
