About the Author

Eric Torgersen has published five volumes of poetry, two novellas, and the NBA-nominated Dear Friend: Rainer Maria Rilke and Paula Modersohn-Becker. Born in Huntington, New York, he has a BA in German Literature from Cornell and an MFA in Poetry from the University of Iowa. He spent two years in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia (a time he draws on for the novella entitled Ethiopia). He has retired after forty years of teaching, thirty-eight of them at Central Michigan University. He lives in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, with his wife, the quilt artist Ann Kowaleski, and now writes almost daily when not traveling.

This well-written and well-researched book is important for anyone interested in painting at the turn of the century, in the position of woman artists at that time, or in Paul Modersohn-Becker herself. It also offers insights into the life and psyche of the famous poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Modersohn-Becker suffers from being known primarily through "Requiem for a Friend," a poem written about her by Rilke, whose view is colored by his own needs and beliefs. Torgersen shows that far from only having made a good beginning, as Rilke claimed, Modersohn-Becker had developed a style of her own and had created a number of arresting and original paintings. Rilke also claimed that in attempting to reconcile marriage and a career in art, Modersohn-Becker had chosen wrongly. Torgersen traces Modersohn-Becker's handling of her husband's attempt to to assert authority over her, and shows that she had convinced him to allow space for her art in their marriage. This, too, was a remarkable achievement for her time. Art historians and feminists ought to read this book.

A superb presentation, but a little out of date

After seeing an earlier printing in the library I had to get a copy for myself. This book has lots of large, easy to understand, photos and drawings with color coded explanations of how things work and how to make repairs or do complete installations. Both theory and how-to-do are covered in easy to understand language, replete with pictures and color coded diagrams of typical systems of single and multiple story houses.

It covers everything from household plumbing to installation of yard sprinkler systems. Also septic systems.

My only complaint is that it has recently become a bit dated. Newer plastic water lines have been developed and are now on the market that expand and contract don't burst when the freeze then thaw without bursting. Installation and/or retrofit using these lines, though simple, isn't covered. A high percentage of plumbing work is necessitated by burst water pipes after a freeze. Lack of information on these new pipes is a big deal. One star deducted.

Otherwise, this is the way a do-it-yourself plumbing book should be written and illustrated. It was definitely worth five stars when it first came out and is still a first rate book for the novice plumber. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Classic Repair Book Series by Time Life

I purchased these books as a series originally in the late 1980's to early 1990's. Over the years I managed to either lose/misplace them or borrowers never brought them back. Though somewhat outdated, they do still provide the basics to plumbing, electrical, etc. for the beginner or home handyman.

The pre-Romantic mood of the period—with its predilection for untamed nature and for peoples uncorrupted by overrefined civilization—further stimulated fascination with the North. European titerati discovered the Nordic sagas, finding them exhilarating, passionate, imaginative, and original. The French Revolution and the ensuing European wars effectively closed off much of the Continent to foreign travel, turning attention to the still neutral northern kingdoms.

Travel literature about Scandinavia thus illuminates the shift in the European intellectual climate from the enlightened rationalism and utilitarianism of the earlier travelers in this period to the pre-Romantic sensibility of those who followed them. In a Europe torn by war and revolution, sensitive souls could find their new Arcadia in the North—at least until the Scandinavian kingdoms themselves became engulfed by the Napoleonic wars after 1805.

The first scholar to examine as a whole the travel literature dealing with Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and the Færø Islands, H. Arnold Barton discusses accounts left by both the celebrated and the obscure. Well-known travelers include Vittorio Alfieri, Francisco de Miranda, Mary Wollstonecraft, Thomas Malthus, and Aaron Burr. Literary travelers of the day included Nathanael Wraxall, William Coxe, Charles Gottlob Küttner, Edward Daniel Clarke, and John Carr.

Northern Arcadia brings out contrasts: among the various Nordic lands and regions; among the reactions of travelers of differing nationality; between the earlier as opposed to the later travelers of the time; between native Scandinavian and foreign perceptions of the North; between conditions in Scandinavia and those in other parts of the Western world; between then and now.
