About the Author

Francis O’Neill was born to a farming family in County Cork in Ireland in 1848. He left home in 1865 and died a true Chicagoan in 1936.

Mary Lesch is Francis O’Neill’s great-granddaughter. She is now retired and divides her time between Chicago and Harbert, Michigan. 

Ellen Skerrett is currently writing a history of Loyola University Chicago. She is the co-author and editor of number of books on Catholicism and Chicago, including At the Crossroads: Old Saint Patrick’s and the Chicago Irish (Wild Onion Books, 1997).

The Most Famous Policeman in Irish Music

Francis O'Neill (1848-1936) was born in Tralibane, Co. Cork, in the southwest of Ireland and, like many of his countrymen at that time, emigrated to the US where he eventually settled in Chicago and climbed through the ranks of the police department to become a highly regarded Superintendent of Police in 1901. Arguably, O'Neill is best remembered in the US, however, for having compiled several large collections of Irish traditional music, which he published in the early 1900s, and which have since become a standard reference for Irish musicians and Irish music lovers the world over. O'Neill wrote a couple of books about his musical hobby, and those who have been able to procure reprints of "Irish Folk Music - A Fascinating Hobby" and "Irish Minstrels and Musicians" will be familiar his wonderful prose and gift as a story-teller. Now comes "Chief O'Neill's Sketchy Recollections of an Eventful Life in Chicago" (Northwestern U Press, 2008), edited from a recently re-discovered manuscript by the most famous policeman in Irish music, where he writes in the same delightful style about his youth in Ireland, his adventures on the high seas, and his career in the Chicago police department. Those who have read Nicholas Carolan's excellent biography of O'Neill, "A Harvest Saved," will be familiar with some of the facts, but O'Neill's accounts, at times charming, humorous, or gripping, and always thoroughly engrossing, are well worth rediscovering through O'Neill's own words.

Who could guess that this career police officer also would become a pivotal figure in music history by meticulously collecting and preserving traditional Irish music? With the publication of this book, O'Neill also will take his place as an observer of life in Chicago. O'Neill records so many encounters with the humble and the great that anyone researching Chicago history from 1871 through 1905 needs to consult this book. The depth of his thinking on issues of his time is impressive, and issues such as political patronage reverberate today. A truly remarkable life.

Literary and Theatrical Dracula til 1975

I found this book in the library when looking for information on the 1931 film Dracula, and was rewarded with all the material I wanted. The bulk of the book is about portrayals of Dracula on stage, screen, and in literature; although there are a couple of early chapters on the historical fact behind the legends they add little to what is generally known about Vlad the impaler, and make no attempt to trace vampire legends any earlier. Although one of the chapters is titled "The Ancestors of Dracula", this chapter is about literary ancestors of Bram Stoker's character. The main limitation to this book is that its publication date precedes much of the more recent interest in vampires, probably spawned by the success of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. No mention is made of vampiric representations or appearances in the visual arts or music--an updating of the book might well cover the several versions of Dracula that have been done as operas or ballet. But as a reference to various media presentations of the Count up to 1975, this is fairly good.

Perfect for inquiring minds

I'll admit I bought this book because I wanted ALL the Time-Life Good Cook Series on my shelf; in the back of my mind I thought this particular volume must contain some useful information and recipes, but other than making sure it was completeand in decent shape, I wanted no more from it at the time. I have lived around the worst sort of wine snobs -- people who claim to love wine and have plenty to spend on it, and yet are for the most part ignorant of "what's to like,"; for fear there would be more of the same, I didn't have a real interest in learning what this volume had to say... until recently.

I found it WONDERFUL: chock-full of facts from page one, with beautiful photos and illustrative drawings, charts and maps. Oh, how could I have distrusted the brilliant editors and writers of this series so? It was nothing, like many a person has said after a new experience, like I thought it would be ...

Yes, there ARE words like vintages and bouquet, (shudder) but it places all buzzwords in actual informational context, and tells you how wine is made, first to last, besides. Do you know why the soil conditions in the Champagne region of France make the bubbly that comes from there like no other? Do you know what condition the skins of the grapes have to be in for a good vintage? Do you know why wine can last many years in the bottle? I know now, and much more besides.

Once a great French chef was visiting America, ordered a fish for his lunch, and ordered a Cabernet to go with it. "And make sure it's well chilled," he said. To the shocked people at his table he explained that tastes in food and wine were really in the end a matter, not of rules, but of personal preference; "So I like a red wine, even with fish? And I prefer to drink it cold? That is my choice, is it not?"

This book gave me a great confidence that if I need to know how to cook with wine or to choose a varietal for serving, I have a solid basis for those needs. Hail to the Good Cooks, they have done it again.

Another cookbook from the beautiful Time-Life collection. These cookbooks are amazing. Beautiful step by step color photographs that demonstrate techniques & just the very best recipes. An amazing set of books & each one is amazing. Get them while they are still available; I don't think you'll be disappointed. Even teaches how to make wine & vinegar!

The 24-year-old Sylvia spent her year in Paris with a delightful chaperone, her maiden aunt Harriet Levy. At 46, Harriet was a seasoned world traveler and a good friend of Gertrude Stein and her family. Thus, both Gertrude’s famous salon and that of Gertrude’s brother Michael were open to Harriet and Sylvia, and therein lies much of the adventure. Half in awe, half amused, Sylvia describes Gertrude Stein as the “biggest, most awfully dressed person I have ever seen.” It was Stein in turn who said of Sylvia, “I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Sylvia is just a very pretty girl from the country.”

 

Sylvia Salinger was witness to one of the most remarkable eras in modern cultural history. She recorded it for her family even as she left a record for herself—and for us. She does not tell her story as an artist creating something of her own, nor as a sophisticate impressing an audience with the people she knows and the sights she has seen, but with the honesty and subtle humor of “a very pretty girl from the country.”

About the Author
The poet Gertrud Kolmar was born into a prominent Jewish family in Berlin in 1894 and died in Auschwitz sometime after February 1943.

As with all Mr. Myers' books, this is a well written account of supposedly haunted dwellings -- in particular, those of famous folk. He draws no conclusions, which gives his tome an air of journalistic honesty. Very interesting, somewhat spooky in places, and quite entertaining.

The wager fragment in Blaise Pascal’s Penseés opens with the phrase "infini rien"—"infinite nothing"—which is meant to describe the human condition. Pascal was responding to what was, even in the seventeenth century, becoming a pressing human problem: we seem to be able to know much about the world but less about ourselves.

The traditional European view of human beings as creatures made in the image of God and potentially capable of a mystical union with God was increasingly confounded by the difficulty of finding God in nature. Despite his own scientific work, however, Pascal argued that if one does not know whether or not God exists, one should bet that he does: if one is right the rewards are infinitely good and, if one is wrong, what one has lost is, by comparison, utterly trivial.

The argument behind this wager is one of the most celebrated—and disputed—in the history of philosophy. It has been seen in terms of the calculus of probabilities, as a piece of religious apologetic, as an event in the religious and psychological life of Pascal himself, and as an event in the life of the Jansenist movement and its various expressions at Port-Royal.

In this book, Leslie Armour explores the underlying logic of ideas brought to the surface by the intersection of two philosophical lines of thought. He shows that Pascal had come to philosophy by way of two particular strands of Platonism, one strongly mystical, associated with the founder of the French Oratorian order, Pierre de Bérulle, and the other the Augustinian Platonism associated with Duvergier de Hauranne and Cornelius Jansen. At the same time Pascal was engaged in an internal struggle with skepticism. While he agreed that it is difficult to find God in physical nature, he disagreed with the claim that we know nothing of nature. The problem is that the human being is both infinite and nothing.

Thus, Armour locates Pascal’s wager within the confluence of a vital neo-Platonism and an intellectually powerful skepticism. He concludes that even today, "If we must act and cannot know enough, we must bet."
