Charlotte Ann Melin shows how Enzensberger has accomplished this by challenging prevailing aesthetic and social values. Departing from existing studies that focus on Enzensberger's political views or controversial texts, her book situates his full poetic program within contemporary discussions staged by various German writers, translators, and theorists, including Jürgen Habermas and Theodor Adorno. Melin proposes a framework for reading poetry by Enzensberger and his contemporaries--one that connects the radical evolution of poetic style with how questions about representation, identity, and ethical values developed under historical conditions unique to the second half of the twentieth century. Her account of postwar literary trends explores the fluidity of national literary boundaries and tastes after 1945, and reveals the relationship of such American poets as William Carlos Williams and Carolyn Forché to German verse. Essential to an understanding Enzensberger as an important literary figure, Poetic Maneuvers also offers invaluable insight into the status of recent postwar German literature and American-European literary relations.

"America fever" gripped Sweden in the middle of the nineteenth century, seethed to a peak in 1910, when one-fifth of the world’s Swedes lived in America, cooled during World War I, and chilled to dead ash with the advent of the Great Depression in 1930.

Swedish Exodus, the first English translation and revision of Lars Ljungmark’s Den Stora Utvandringen, recounts more than a century of Swedish emigration, concentrating on such questions as who came to America, how the character of the emigrants changed with each new wave of emigration, what these people did when they reached their adopted country, and how they gradually became Americanized.

Ljungmark’s essential challenge was to capture in a factual account the broad sweep of emigration history. But often he narrows his focus to look closely at those who took part in this mass migration. Through historical records and personal letters, Ljungmark brings many of these people back to life. One young woman, for example, loved her parents, but loved America more: "I never expect to speak to you in this life. . . . Your loving daughter unto death." Like most immigrants, she never expected to return. Another immigrant wrote back seeking a wife: "I wonder how you have it and if you are living. . . . Are you married or unmarried? If you are unmarried, you can have a good home with me."

Ljungmark also focuses closely on some of the leaders: Peter Cassel, a liberal temperance supporter and free-church leader whose community in America prospered; Hans Mattson, a colonel in the Civil War and founder of a colony in Minnesota; Erik Jansson, a book burner, self-proclaimed messiah, and founder of the Bishop Hill Colony; Gustaf Unonius, a student idealist and founder of a Wisconsin colony that faltered.

The story of Swedish immigrants in the United States is the story in miniature of the greatest mass migration in human history, that of thirty-five million Europeans who left their homes to come to America. It is a human story of interest not only to Swedes but to everyone.

The chapters of this book set out the points of major importance about Swedish emigration to America. This is good as a place to start reading about Scandinavian emigration studies and its solid selected bibliography is helpful for guidance to more academic works.

Swedes looking for a better life in America

Although the first Swedes to come to America founded their own colony bordering what later became Philadelphia and stretched into New Jersey in 1638, it was not until over two hundred years later in the 1850's that Swedish immigration to America reached a substantial level. This books tells the interesting story of how over a million Swedish immigrants, from 1851 to 1930, came to establish themselves in the United States. Included are accounts of a number of immigrant histories and how they came to settle in various parts of our country, usually in the Midwest. One learns that Sweden in those days was far from the progressive nation that we now know, but instead a heavily stratified society lacking in religious freedom outside of the state-sanctioned Lutheran church. Not only did many Swedes find the freedom and opportunity that they sought in America, their immigration had a lasting influence on Sweden itself as it moved towards becoming a more attractive country for its existing citizens--thereby dissuading them from voting with their feet and leaving the old country for America's beaconing shores.

In these pages one can find out why so many Swedes decided to come to America, how they mananged it, where they emigrated to in America, how many came during each year of the mass migration, how many remigrated each year, how many came from each major Swedish district, and how they did in America. It even outlines the consequences of the emigration on Sweden. It is nicely indexed, contains a useful bibliography, and is illustrated with photos and drawings.

A great training guide for anyone

Like many triathletes I had a bit of swimming in my background when I started racing, but certainly not enough to be competitive. I occasionally swam with organized groups but my consultant travel schedule made sure that was infrequent. I got a copy of The Fit Swimmer, read it cover to cover and made up about a dozen workouts from the suggested routines. The section on open water racing was particularly valuable. While training diligence was definitely part of it, this book was the #1 resource for me in competitively placing in events ranging from local races to National and Ironman distances. Ms. Brems meets 2 imperatives: she explains things simply and she gives you the tools you need to progress from a relative novice to a competitive swimmer. Like a craftsman and apprentice, she leaves it up to the reader to figure out how to best use the extensive toolset in the book. I found that creating about a dozen workouts on 3x5 cards from her suggested routines and rotating them did the trick (store them in a ziploc bag for use poolside). You can experiment with different routines to test how your body responds. I now coach people on an occasional basis, and strongly encourage each of them to read the book before we start.

40 + swimmer

This is a very useful book for setting up a swimming program on your own. It has lots of workouts for all levels of swimmers. I am training myself for an upcoming open water ocean swim (the book has two chapters just on open water training)I photocopied several pages with great work outs and put them in a plastic bag so I can have them pool side while working out. It is the next best thing to a coach. Don't bother with any other swimming books. Many other books are written for people who have been coached in swimming and know all the "jargon", this one explains what is necessary and keeps it simple.

The Fit Swimmer in my initial review appears to be an excellent guide to someone willling and able to follow the advice, training programs and tips given in the book. For someone like myself, a super senior (past 75), I appreciate the advice and tips but I am not training for competition but just fitness purposes. I may adapt one of the training programs offered but for now I'll continue my swimming a mile ( freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke mixture) three times a week until I finish the book.

Susan Deller Ross is a professor of law at the University of Georgetown Law Center. Her publications include a law school casebook entitled Sex Discrimination and the Law; several articles on women’s legal rights; and judicial training materials on child custody, visitation, and spousal support for the Women Judges Fund for justice.

Isabelle Katz Pinzler has been director of the ACLU Women’s Rights Project since 1978.

In The World Wars Through the Female Gaze, Jean Gallagher maps one portion of the historicized, gendered territory of what Nancy K. Miller calls the "gaze in representation." Expanding the notion of the gaze in critical discourse, Gallagher situates a number of visual acts within specific historic contexts to reconstruct the wartime female subject. She looks at both the female observer's physical act of seeing—and the refusal to see—for example, a battlefield, a wounded soldier, a torture victim, a national flag, a fashion model, a bombed city, or a wartime hallucination.

The book begins with two instances of wartime propaganda written by American women in France in 1915. Both Edith Wharton's Fighting France and Mildred Aldrich's A Hilltop on the Marne offer a complex and often contradictory sense of a woman writer's struggles with authority, resistance, and killing. In the process, Gallagher teases out the role of specular vision and the impossibility of "directly" seeing the war.

Gallagher then turns to literary and visual texts produced by two female journalists between 1940 and 1945. Martha Gellhorn's 1940 novel A Stricken Field exhibits a range of gendered seeing positions within and in opposition to the visual ideologies of fascism during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. Lee Miller's war correspondence and photography for Vogue show how Miller constructed herself and her predominantly female American audience as antifascist observers of war by working with and against some of the conventions of surrealist fashion photography.

Gallagher concludes by focusing on the experimental autobiographical prose of H.D. and Gertrude Stein to explore the functions of vision on two World War II "homefronts"—London during the Blitz and Vichy France.

We were required to read this this as doctoral students for a John Dewey course. Glad that there is an option to purchase it electronically. Meanwhile, it's a fairly easy read with plenty of headings and sub-headings to help quickly reference information. It also seems like a pretty comprehensive look at Dewey's theory of education. Holmes concluded, "Three generations of imbeciles are enough."

Massive changes in attitude and in legislation have occurred since that infamous Holmes dictum. The struggle has been arduous—and certainly is not over—but progress has been made. The movement to establish and protect the rights of people with mental disabilities has entailed an effort to gain fair and equal treatment and to foster the respect and dignity every human being deserves.

About the Author

Robert M. Levy is a federal magistrate judge in the Eastern District of New York. The former senior staff attorney for the New York Civil Liberties Union, he is an adjunct professor of law at Columbia, New York University, and Brooklyn Law Schools, where he teaches courses in mental disability law.

Leonard S. Rubenstein is the executive director of Physicians for Human Rights. He is also an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center in the Public Interest Law Scholars Program.

Very good but old. Does that matter?

This was the only thing of its kind on the shelf of the public library in Zero, Mississippi. I don't know if there are comparable and/or more recent books covering these topics.

This is written in a question-and-answer format. It covers issues that may arise in institutions and in general life. I'm not really in any position to assess the value of the information (who is, aside from people who have a profound grasp of law and mental health issues both?), but it seemed to me to be to-the-point and authoritative. It is written in plain American English, not the Pig Latin used by some lawyers and some people in the various health fields. Authors: Levy: federal magistrate judge; & Rubenstein: lawyer and Exec Director of Physicians for Human Rights.

(A footnote: one of the staff in the library in Zero really has it in for homeless people, or people who are being run out of their houses by abusive or intolerable housemates. No sleeping, no snoring, no smelly types, by gum! The lack of an index made it impossible to look up "library", or "nasty staff in libraries". However, under the "Right to be free from discrimination", I read that people can sue the socks off "places of public accommodation" over this kind of stuff. They gave a definition of such places, and "libraries" were among them.)
