An adventurer in both the physical and intellectual senses of the word, Heinrich Lienhard was born in Switzerland in 1822 and immigrated to America in 1843. Published here for the first time in either the original German or in English translation, this initial section of Lienhard’s enormous manuscript autobiography (more than half a million words) covers the years after his birth through his first several years in America.

Lienhard’s account of his early years consists of four segments: his early years and boyhood in the Swiss canton of Glarus, 1822–1843; his journey to America, August-November 1843; his two and a half years in Highland, Illinois; and his life in the upper Mississippi Valley. This section ends in April 1846, when Lienhard began the arduous and dangerous journey from St. Louis to Captain John Sutter’s fort at New Helvetia, California.

Lienhard has provided an unusually full account of his early life. The book contains fifty-one chapters, with each chapter featuring one or more life-shaping incidents for this pioneer who would successfully cross the Rocky Mountains at the same time the Donner party, taking a different and more obvious route, perished.

A few of the chapter titles demonstrate both the flavor and the thoroughness of this autobiography: "Father’s Thoughtless Words—Abuse from Brother Peter and Undeserved Punishment by Father"; "An Appropriate Warning to Father—How Brother Peter Treated Me Deceitfully and Treacherously—How Apprentices Are Treated"; "Becoming More or Less American"; and "Short Stay at Schneider’s—Going to Mollet’s Where Three Times Daily for a Period of Nine Weeks I Am Fed Bad Cornbread, Oversalted Bacon, and Wheat Slop."

In his foreword, John H. Lienhard IV characterizes his great-grandfather: "Certain family writings and comments suggest that my grandfather had trouble understanding Heinrich’s ‘who-cares’ attitude toward the consumption of his fortune. The irony is clear. Heinrich’s fortune was the result of his pursuit of freedom, not of fortune. His son enjoyed the settled life that Heinrich’s gains had provided. My grandfather could far better understand ‘good business’ than the forces driving Heinrich."

Pat's recipes are very easy to follow, very thoughtfully conceived and they are easy to execute. The end result is wonderful. I've made many of these recipes over and over again. If you get one Italian cookbook, this should be it!

This is one of my old standards-- in other words, an all-time favorite. It's got great, simple recipes. The roasted vegetable recipe is outstanding. If you need pictures, this book is not for you, but use your imagination-- It's worth it!

About the Author
Irene Kahn Atkins was raised among Hollywood musical films as daughter of famed lyricist Gus Kahn and was later a music editor. She has conducted oral histories for craftsmen in music and sound for the American Film Institute and Yale University, as well as for the Directors Guild of America, and published Source Music in Motion Pictures (Fairleigh Dickinson, 1983).

A Rare Book About an Under-rated Film Director

Henry Koster was an established film director in pre-WWII Germany. Leaving Germany in the early 1930s and escaping Nazi wrath literally by the skin of his teeth, he eventually came to the USA and embarked on a career as one of the most prominent motion picture directors under contract at 20th Century-Fox studios. If you're a movie nut, like me, you may not be able to name more than one or two of his movies (without cheating), but when you take a look at the titles of the films he directed and the stars who were in those films, you can't help but say, "Why in the hell didn't I ever hear of this guy before?". This book is like a teaser, you want to know more, you want to dwelve even deeper into the particulars of some of the great films he directed. Someone, for instance, like Donald Spoto, should have done a biography about Mr. Koster and interviewed him while he was still with us, before many of the anecdotes, particulars and esoterica about his career went with him. I really enjoyed this book. It's done in interview (interrogation?) style under the auspices of the Director's Guild of America. It's an important document, but it leaves one wanting for much more. It's not a total tragedy, because we still have his films to enjoy.

He hit his stride at Warner Bros., where, between 1937 and 1942, he produced twelve films with such popular stars as James Cagney (Each Dawn I Die), Humphrey Bogart (It All Came True), Bette Davis (Dark Victory), Ronald Reagan (Kings Row), Errol Flynn (Four's a Crowd), and Charles Boyer (All This and Heaven Too). His films were nominated for a total of 15 Academy Awards, including three for Best Picture. Some of Lewis's films have rightfully become classics; all reflect an unerring instinct for character and structure, part of the filmmaking process he describes in The Creative Producer.

Schanke rescues these lost theatrical writings from the dusty margins of obscurity. Often autobiographical, always rife with gender struggle, and still decidedly stageworthy, Women in Turmoil: Six Plays by Mercedes de Acosta constitutes a significant find for the canon of gay and lesbian drama.

 

In her 1960 autobiography Here Lies the Heart, de Acosta notes that as she was contemplating marriage to a man in 1920, she was "in a strange turmoil about world affairs, my own writing, suffrage, sex, and my inner spiritual development." The voice in these plays is that of a lesbian in turmoil, marginalized and ignored. Her same-sex desires and struggles for acceptance fueled her writings, and nowhere is that more evident than in the plays contained herein. The women characters struggle with unfulfilling marriages, divorce, unrequited sexual desire, suppressed identity, and a longing for recognition.

 

Of the six plays, only the first two were ever produced. Jehanne d’Arc (1922) premiered in Paris with de Acosta’s lover at the time, Eva Le Gallienne, starring and Norman Bel Geddes designing the set and lights. In 1934, de Acosta adapted it into a screenplay for Greta Garbo, then her lover, but it was never filmed. Portraying rampant anti-Semitism in a small New England town, Jacob Slovak (1923) was performed both on Broadway and in London, with the London production starring John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson.

 

The Mother of Christ (1924) is a long one-act play written for the internationally known actress Eleonora Duse. After Duse’s death, several other actresses including Eva Bartok, Jeanne Eagels, and Lillian Gish explored productions of the play. Igor Stravinsky wrote a score, Norman Bel Geddes designed a set, and Gladys Calthrop designed costumes. However, the play was never produced.

Her most autobiographical play, World Without End (1925), and her most sensational play, The Dark Light (1926), both unfold through plots of sibling rivalry, incest, and suicide. With overtones of Ibsen, Illusion (1928) continues the themes of de Acosta’s previous plays with her rough and seedy cast of characters, but here the playwright’s drama grows to incorporate a yearning for belonging as well as strong elements of class conflict.

 

What notoriety remains associated with de Acosta has less to do with her writing than with her infamous romances with the likes of Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Isadora Duncan, Alla Nazimova, Eva Le Gallienne, Tamara Karsavina, Pola Negri, and Ona Munson. Through this collection of six powerfully poignant dramas, editor Robert A. Schanke strives to correct myths about Mercedes de Acosta and to restore both her name and her literary achievements to their proper place in history.

Robert A. Schanke is a professor of theater at Central College, Iowa. William Darby has taught English and film at various colleges and universities in southeastern Michigan since 1974, when his doctoral dissertation on Sir Walter Scott was completed at Wayne State University.
