Charles G. Clarke (1899-1983) was a prolific Hollywood cinematographer whose career extended from the Twenties through the early Sixties. Among his best-known films are Miracle on 34th Street and Carousel. Clarke's autobography is filled with unique anecdotes and personal observations on those with whom he worked, including Will Rogers, John Ford, and Henry King.

About the Author
Charles was an early pioneer of cinematography who won four Academy Award nominations.
Slide has published over fifty pioneering works on film history, among them the first volumes dealing exclusively with early American cinema, the Vitagraph Company, and film preservation. In 1990, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of letters.

Just The Facts, 'Mam

An interesting breakneck paced tour through the silent beginning of an American cameraman. He runs through the films he's worked on with a quick anecdote or aside. He seems to have a hand in almost innovation ever had in the business, from matte painting to barn doors to graduated filters. He appears to be Fox's go to 2nd unit DP/director, traveling the world getting wide shots and background plates. The most thrilling and well recorded part of the book revolves around a harrowing survival story in Alaska. Real Jack London stuff.
Although he was president of the ASC, he doesn't mention it nor does he relate any personal stories with his contemporary photographers.
Not a fantastic book but it gives a first person, below the line history of Hollywood
