This book is very informative and written much like a text book

This book is very informative and written much like a text book, eschewing the very common route of dramatization that many books on the paranormal take (don't get me wrong I enjoy said dramatic books). I actually read it to help me fall asleep. It's quite effective in that regard.

THE Compendium of Strange Phenomena

I have many of these types of books in my collection, from small paperbacks to fancier hardcover Reader's Digest-type compendiums, from Rupert J. Gould's _Oddities_ to works by William Corliss and Brad Steiger - themselves no hack journalists of the unexplained - and none of them hold a candle to the sheer pragmatic necessity of this book. An avid cryptozoologist might note, for example, his deliberate separation of the North American Sasquatch, Orang Pendek, the Himalayan Yeti and various other Wildmen into separate entries, yet even still reserving space for more cautionary cryptid accounts such as "Momo" and casting a brief spotlight deservedly upon the issue of de Loys' monkey ("Mono Grande"). Although the sheer scope of the material demands that Clark is efficient with his prose and occasionally miss some things (why, for example, is Momo covered while the Boggy Creek sightings, which spawned several movies, are left out ?) you will be surprised how much substantive information is contained in these pages. The author is meticulous and footnotes extensively, always describing his material with a keen eye for journalistic accuracy and healthy dose of skepticism, all of which makes this a fantastic compendium, reference manual, and all-around eye-opening introduction to the "Borderlands."
Im also happy to report this book seems to have spawned a vastly-expanded second edition. I would suggest hunting that down first before attempting to grab this one second-hand, but any way you can own it, it should be welcome in your library, rabid skeptic and would-be sasquatch hunter alike.

An Excellent Guide

"Unexplained" isn't for the credulous believer or the dogmatic disbeliever. It is, rather, for those individuals who have a genuine interest in truly fascinating mysteries and who want to use their intelligence, guided by their world view, to determine which, if any, of these strange phenomena are plausible. Clark's treatment of these extraordinary occurrences reflects a refreshingly objective mind-set, and he implicitly invites the reader to adopt a similar approach and perspective. I have referred to this book time and again since I purchased it several years ago. My only complaint is that Clark did not give enough space to subjects that I found particularly intriguing -- e.g., "The Dover Demon" -- and too much to those that have already been written about ad nauseum, such as the Loch Ness Monster. But that's a matter of personal taste. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author

Thomas B. Stoddard is an attorney in private practice in New York City. In addition to his private practice, he currently serves as Legislative Counsel to the New York Civil Liberties Union and as Assistant Adjunct Professor of Law at New York University, where he teaches a course on the rights of gay people.

 

E. Carrington Boggan is a New York City attorney who has done considerable work in the area of gay civil rights. He has served as General Counsel for Lambda Defense and Education Fund, Inc., a non-profit corporation that protects the civil rights of gay people through the legal process. He is also a past Chairperson of the American Bar Association Section on Individual Rights and Responsibilities.

 

Marilyn G. Haft has worked extensively in the areas of women’s rights, prisoners’ rights, and sexual privacy. She has served as Director of the ACLU National Project on Sexual Privacy and has chaired subcommittees on prostitution and victimless crimes for the American Bar Association. She has also worked in the Office of the Counsel to the Vice-President of the United States and on the staff of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

 

Charles Lister is an attorney in Washington, D.C. A graduate of Harvard and Oxford Universities, he has served as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force and as law clerk to Mr. Justice Harlan of the U.S. Supreme Court. He has been as Associate Professor at the Yale Law School, and has served as a consultant on privacy and civil liberties issues to various state and federal agencies.

 

John P. Rupp is a graduate of the Yale Law School, and is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and Maine. He has previously worked in the Office of the Solicitor General of the United States, and is presently an attorney in Washington, D.C.

Screen Gems-the best and original television studio!

This book provides the most accurate and interesting history of the original television studio that brought the industry to life and for nearly four and a half decades brought us our favorite classic sitcoms. They defined the television industry as being the first Hollywood studio-owned company to produce television programs. It may be outdated, but it is an excellent look at this ancient television studio!

Screen Gems/CPT book

I purchased this book recently for my birthday, and it is fully entitled "Screen Gems: A History of Columbia Pictures Television from Cohn to Coke, 1948-1983," by Jeb H. Perry. The book was written in 1991, and is Mr. Perry's second tome on a major film/TV studio; his first was on Universal, and was published in 1983.

I ran through it for the first time earlier, and in that first runthrough, I must say that I am very impressed w/the detail that Mr. Perry gave to the subject, from corporate history (which includes some of the logos that Screen Gems/CPT had in that timeframe) to the various series that SG/CPT made over the period covered in the book (and there were a lot of them), either on their own or with other people ("other people" meaning vanity cards and other collaborators, generally). There are also sections on TV movies (some that were pilots for the series that followed them), known in this book as "telefeatures"; other pilots that were apparently unsold; and specials. The book ends with a chronology in list form of the series that SG/CPT made, a list of Emmy nominees and winners on those series, and an index of major stars and co-stars and production personnel (producers, EPs, film editors, etc.).

In total, with all sections taken together, the book runs for an impressive (in my view) 371 pages (last I counted), and is very stylishly bound in hardcover.

One minor nitpick with regard to the corporate history section: Mr. Perry states that CPT began in 1974 (which is correct) with a logo "representing the glow from The Lady's torch." The nitpick is that the Sunburst/Abstract Torch (a name for it that I share with other TV logo fans) did not begin until 1976, and therefore Mr. Perry left out the real first logo of CPT, the "Pretzel." This is a very minor nitpick, and one that did not impede my enjoyment of the book (and should not impede yours should you purchase it, as I'm very heartily recommending and hoping that you will do).

This book is so vivid. Absolutely no words in the comic strips are needed to understand exactly what the cat in each comic strip is doing. They're SO funny! One comic strip has two cats playing tennis with a mouse as a "tennisball." Another comic strip has an owner of a cat holding a bill from a delivery guy for MANY boxes of tuna that she obviously didn't order and her cat nearby looking on innocently. The feline humor just keeps PURRING along! Buy it with confidence for that absolutely FELINE laugh!

Laugh-out-loud funny even for a dog owner

I've had this book for close to 20 years now—as a "dog" person, I'm not sure why I bought it in the first place but it has become one of my favorite “comic” books. Every time I pick it up I always find something that’s “hang on the cubicle wall-worthy” or “gotta share THIS one with a friend-worthy” even though I’ve read it dozens of times. Slightly twisted, but nothing too demented or in poor taste. Love it.

About the Author

Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick. His first three books gained much contemporary attention (the first, Typee, becoming a bestseller), and after a fast-blooming literary success in the late 1840s, his popularity declined precipitously in the mid-1850s and never recovered during his lifetime. When he died in 1891, he was almost completely forgotten. It was not until the "Melville Revival" in the early 20th century that his work won recognition, especially Moby-Dick, which was hailed as one of the literary masterpieces of both American and world literature. He was the first writer to have his works collected and published by the Library of America.

An invaluable work for all Melville scholars who will undoubtely find in this correspondence many insights on his art and craft. Though the letters to Hawthorne remain the most piercing contributes to his fiction, those covering the last part of Melville's life will surely prove an enlightening discovery, charting as they do the perilous journey through the life and mind of the aging author. Strongly recommended.

A novelist, dramatist, short-story writer, and essayist, Zofia Nalkowska (1884-1954) was a leading proponent of the avant-garde of her day. A resident of Warsaw, she was an active member of the Polish PEN Club, the first female member of the Polish Academy of Literature, and the patron of a popular Warsaw literary salon. Her life in occupied Warsaw during World War II is the subject of her Wartime Diaries and Medallions.

Diana Kuprel has a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Toronto. She is a postdoctoral fellow for the Literary History Project, University of Toronto, and editor in chief of Books in Canada: The Canadian Review of Books.

Mr. Kozlovov , I feel outraged of your ignorance and denial of Holocaust. This book is a testimony of people who witnessed the horros of Holocaust and others who lived through it and survived it. Your narrow minded and uneducated way of looking at worlds biggest tragedy is truly disturbing not to say disgusting. I recommend trip to Poland to Aushwitz ASAP. Maybe after you take a look at what one nation did to the other you will open your blind eyes. I truly believe it is because of people who think like you that Holocaust even happend...

medallions- real testimonies

It is very interesting to see how uneducated and uninformed people express their ignorant opinions. For those who don't know, Zofia Nalkowska was a known political activist after WWII. She wrote the book "Medallions" on the basis on true interviews she conducted with the holocaust survivors. All the stories in her book are real. Moreover, her book "Mediallions" has been praised by many great literary figures, critics and others, for the way she wrote the book: with no author's opinions, with no subjective (her) adjectives, no beautyfing, no changes - only blank testimonies of those who saw on their own eyes and experienced on their own bodies the horrors written down in "Medallions." Trully, I believe those testimonies are more real and know more truth than some unexperienced and uneducated reader. The book is not a fiction, just as well the holocaust was not.

I don't have any doubts that there will be SOME people whose ignorance and limited knowledge about the subject concerning holocaust lead them to think about this book in terms of fiction. I hope that one day they would stop living inside the box and their thinking horizons would expand.
Before that happen it is not the book for them. For everyone else who wants to know the horror and real face of holocaust--- lock your seat belt.

Still Relevant and Intelligent After all These Years

This is the best book in the Life Library of Photography series. I acquired the collection in the early 1970s, as a young teenager and budding photographer, and I have returned to it many times through the years, particularly the "Light and Film" volume. Though out of print, this book is even relevant to today's digital photography because, fundamentally, the properties of light and the capturing of images, whether on film or on digital light receptors, remains true all across Newtonian time and space. (If you get into the Einsteinian realm, you're on your own.) The book is moderately technical, but that is good, because it provides a depth that allows you to learn more with every reading. The basic lesson of the book is to see light from the film's perspective. I can't speak enough on how important that is for good, consistent, instinctual photography. The chapter on the 10-tone gray scale is the best single tool I have in my photographic arsenal. I use what I learned from that chapter EVERY DAY when I use Photo Shop to adjust the blacks, whites, and grays of my images...

Traditionally, scholars have traced the origin of Christianity to a single source—the kingdom of God as represented in the message of the historical Jesus. Through a rhetorical critical analysis of one of the most important texts in early Christian literature (the Beelzebul controversy), Michael L. Humphries addresses the issue of Christian origins, demonstrating how the language of the kingdom of God is best understood according to its locative or taxonomic effect where the demarcation of social and cultural boundaries contributes to the emergence of this new social foundation.

The Beelzebul controversy exists in two versions— Q and Mark—and thereby allows the study to engage the import of the kingdom language at the point of juxtaposition between two distinct textual representations. This makes it possible to deal directly with the issue of the disparity of texts in the synoptic tradition. Humphries suggests that these two versions of the same controversy indicate two distinct social trajectories wherein the kingdom of God comes to mean something quite different in each case but that nevertheless they demonstrate a similarity in theoretical effect where the language contributes to the emergence of relatively distinct social formations.

Humphries establishes the Q and Markan versions of the Beelzebul controversy as relatively sophisticated compositions that are formally identified as elaborate chreiai (a literary form used in the teaching of rhetoric at the secondary and post-secondary level of GrecoRoman education) and that offer an excellent example of the rhetorical manipulation of language in the development of social and cultural identity.

A Juicy Piece of the Puzzle

As a writer and amateur historian who researches and writes on topics of religion, and not being a trained scholar who is able to translate texts for myself, I rely on books such as this one to give me the tools to ply my trade. This is a particularly juicy one since the Beelzebul Controversy has always struck me as a key component to understanding just what the heck was going on back then.

In my opinion, based on wide reading, there's a real possibility that the "god" that "Jesus" was talking about in terms of the "heavenly father" and the "kingdom of god" may very well have been "Beelzebul" and not Yahweh. It seems clear from reading the works of Burton Mack: A MYTH OF INNOCENCE (Foundations & Facets Series)", the The Lost Gospel: The Book of Q and Christian Origins, Who Wrote the New Testament?: The Making of the Christian Myth, etc., as well as the works of other biblical scholars and historians of religion, such as Thomas L. Thompson, Phillip Davies, John van Seters, Giovanni Garbini, Niels Peter Lemche, and others, that Jesus very probably was not a Jew at all and it was only Jewish Christians who sought to cast him in that role to underwrite their "Synagogue reform" intentions, to indemnify themselves against the charge of following after "foreign gods."

In "Christian Origins and the Language of the Kingdom of God," Michael L. Humphries analyzes the "Beelzebul controversy" and draws some fascinating conclusions, though he doesn't go as far as I have in the above statement. It was only while reading his analysis that it occurred to me that it was obvious that the god of the real "Jesus" WAS Beelzebul.

This book is a very good explication of the problem of the Beelzebul Controversy and the argument is generally well presented and well-reasoned. I would recommend this book also to a general, non-expert reader for some very good background on biblical texts and how they are studied by scholars.
