The link between these guys, other than that to untutored ears their music all sounds the same, is that they're supposed to be "hunks"--male pinups, beefcake, that is. Somehow, Garth Brooks and Dwight Yoakum are among the 16 (so're expectables like Billy Ray Cyrus and Clint Black) and Marty Stewart isn't--go figure. Definitely light reading (kinda weird, too: Bego seems to think that country music's roots are in bluegrass, but if he means the musical genre instead of the plant, he's dead wrong), definitely for light-reading young country fans. AWESOME, EDUCATIONAL and FUN!

This book is huge! It goes through every day of the year, listing holidays around the world inlcuding all religions and nationalities. It lists historical events for that day, famous birthdays, etc.
I highly recommend it for anyone who needs some creative ideas on a month-to-month basis other than the standard holidays. It lists those goofie, off-the-wall celebrations: Did you know January 4 (pg.2) is "National Trivia Day?" Or that February (pg. 87-88) is also has "National Pickle Week" (I always thought it was in May!) or "Kraut and Frankfurter Week" or is "National Potato Lover's Month?" And although August (pg. 584) doesn't have any national holidays it does have "National Clown Week" and ironically "National Beauty Queen Week." LOL Who thinks of this stuff anyway?
I bought this as a reference book for ideas for my website. But, teachers, social event supervisors, etc. might find it a great resource for projects also.

Many books focus on the terminology of a particular field in the arts, but this dictionary covers the gamut from acoustics to vaudeville, including stagecraft, circus, film, and broadcasting. Moore, a composer and author (Crowell's Handbook of World Opera), and Varchaver, a musician and editor for the Hudson Group, exude both experience and love of the arts. The definitions, which cover slang and technical terms, are succinct and informative, often detailing the derivations of words. Guides for pronunciation are provided for non-English words. Variant spellings, cross references, and See references have been meticulously noted. An entertaining feature is the juxtaposition of very different meanings from different fields for the same word. The appendix, which lists 350 influential artists with only three or four words of description each, is the one disappointment. The emphasis here is definitely on Western European tradition, but the impressive array of information so artfully arranged makes this book a gem. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.

The best thing about this dictionary, for me, is the treatment of the basic terms of drama that came originally from Aristotle and, here at least, are applied to the basic principles of modern theater in a lucid and meaningful manner.

As the direct result of modern scholarship accessible only since the 1960s, it is now possible to appraise fully the life of this remarkable person who was born in Lichfield 19 February 1717, a childhood friend of Samuel Johnson, who became the greatest English theatrical luminary who ever lived, and who when he died 20 January 1779 was mourned by the nation and eulogized by Dr. Johnson as one whose death “eclipsed the gaiety of nations.”

For twenty-nine years (1747–1776) Garrick managed Drury Lane theatre, caring passionately for its well-being. His own acting set the pace for the performances, his discipline carried it on, and his theatrical innovations attracted the audiences on which the lives, hopes, and families of some 140 actors, actresses, singers, dancers, and others depended. In addition, he wrote, adapted, or altered some 49 plays and wrote nearly 100 prologues.

What emerges from this big, new critical biography is a fully drawn portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman, with a wide range of acquaintances, elegant socially, morally, and personally, and an engaging conversationalist with and respecter of women of mark and with his closest friends. He was also, as the evidence now shows, the solid link with his own age and the great dramatic artists of the past, from the Restoration playwrights to Massinger, Jonson, Shakespeare, and early English dramatists.

About the Author
SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (1859-1930) was born of Irish parentage in Scotland. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but he also had a passion for storytelling. His first book introduced that prototype of the modern detective in fiction, Sherlock Holmes. Despite the immense popularity Holmes gained throughout the world, Doyle was not overly fond of the character and preferred to write other stories. Eventually popular demand won out and he continued to satisfy readers with the adventures of the legendary sleuth. He also wrote historical romances and made two essays into pseudoscientific fantasy: The Lost World and The Poison Belt.

Oldie But Goodie - Cooking on a Single Burner - Lot's of tips and tricks.

As a young explorer scout I started out learning to cook in the wilds using this and the Hungry Hikers Book of Good Cooking by Gretchen McHugh. Since then I've put together a wide variety of meals for many different types of outdoor adventures. From beach camping in remote areas in Baja, backpacking deep in the Frank Church Wilderness, to canoe camping with family and friends, this book has served me well. I just bought a new dehydrator and was looking to see if there were any new books on the subject. When I saw this listed I had a odd moment as I realized this book has been a valued resource for over 20 years.

Yes - some of the recipes use canned food. So what? The primary focus is cooking a meal on a single burner. The real gems are the advice sprinkled throughout the book as "Chef's Secrets". In the 40 years since this book originally came out in 1975 much has changed, especially the science of nutrition and sports, but the basics of good food in the outdoors hasn't. What I like best about this book is the no nonsense approach. Most of the recipes are easily translated to the dehydrator and other prep techniques. Swap out cans for their dehydrated equivalents - easy peasy.

The recipe that everyone asks for again and again is One Burner Fondue (made of croutons, dehydrated eggs, dry milk, spices, and cheese) which I serve piping hot in mugs for dipping crackers, fruit, dehydrated veggies, etc. Then there is Harriett's slaw recipe which I adapted for dehydrated cabbage and carrot - super nutrition, super simple, super easy, super tasty, I've also made again and again her dry milk nogs, nut butter mix-ins spreads, breakfast corn pancakes, (I use the leftovers as sandwich bread) I've made dehydrator versions of her 15 Minute Stroganoff, All at Once Spaghetti, Tortilla Sloppy Joes, and many others. When it came time to buy a sleek new cooking pot I remembered her advice and made sure the lid could be used to warm tortillas or bread while the main meal in the pot was cooking. I've also used her advice on how to make wild rose-hip campsite jam, dandelion blossom fritters, and to use wild foraged clover blossoms in scones, pancakes, salads, and tea. This book is a classic for a reason.

THE bible for outdoor cooking

I've had this book for several years. While preparing for an extended car camping trip, I pulled it out again and was once again amazed at the breadth of recipes. There are recipes, variations of recipes, ideas for recipes, tips, hints, "chef's secrets"--her wealth of ideas is practically awe-inspiring. It's a terrific book just for leafing through and getting ideas. At home, I strive for fresh ingredients and creative cooking; while camping, ease of preparation and ease of clean-up are my primary rules. There are recipes in this book that meet each of those situations, and more than a few that meet both. Sure, there are a few I'll never use (even while camping I can't quite bring myself to eat Spam), but overall there's no better resource. I've bought several other camping cookbooks recently, but this one retains its spot as my most treasured camping cookbook.

Not only are these great recipes for camping, they're great quick recipes at home.
In addition to "one burner" meals, there are also good recipes for dutch oven cooking, preserved food (pemmican, jerky, trail mix), and make-aheads (cook before going).

Impressive Account of One of America's Finest Athletes

Wow, before opening this book I had never heard of Helen Stephens, and now that I've finished Sharon Kinney Hanson's fine book about her life, I feel as though I have known her forever! They called her the Fulton Flash because of her great speed, and her ability to sprint took her out of Missouri and catapulted her to the great stages of the world. Like a comet streaking across the sky she represented the United States in the now legendary Berlin Olympics of 1936, where she appeared in front of Adolf Hitler and, no doubt, gave him a few ruminations about the power and speed of America. The Olympics were actually far from a rout for Germany, as Kinney Hanson reminds us. Nowadays we think that because of Jesse Owens and other great Amerucan performances, that Germany had its ass handed to it at the games, but far from it, they actually did very well and Hitler must have been quite proud! In women's track events, Germany won seven medals, the US only two--both courtesy of Helen Stephens. Conceivably she could have won more medals, but some events later open to women competitors in later Olympics were closed to them in 1936 (like shotput, at which Stephens was a great champ).

Photos show she was an astonishing beauty, with great bones, perhaps a little Amazonian and androgynous. Some people thought she was a man, and this irked her no end. She sued LOOK magazine and the funny comeuppance for LOOK she went out on a date with one of LOOK's lawyers. After several drinks things got hot and heavy. As the author reports, "Helen told her friend Gertrude Webb, 'I had a sense he was trying to find something. So this ole country girl let him roam around awhile 'til he found what he was lookin' for. I just wanted to settle it then and there!"

Nevertheless, Stephens was a lesbian in a homophobic society and stood her ground with dignity and courage. It was hard for such a woman to 'come out' but inevitably she did, or almost did. The whole tragedy of women's sports in the twentieth century is a story that Sharon Kinney Hanson tells with distinction and clarity. She brings all her skills to her on-point account of the apparently intersex sprinter Stella Walsh, killed by a robber's gunfire in 1980, and because of the violent death was subject to an autopsy in Cleveland of all places, which revealed her ambiguous genitalia. Stella Walsh, one of the greatest Olympic heroines, was one of the closest friends of the Fulton Flash, and her death apparently had great impact on Helen. I won't reveal any more of the story, except to say, it is an amazing one, the kind that makes you put down the book and just say, "Holy Moly."

Helen Stephens was a remarkable athlete and a trailblazer in women's competitive sports.

This was not a pageturner, but the story itself was very interesting, especially if you live in the St. Louis area. Helen Stephens appears to be a wonderful lady who cared a lot about her family and who had to rise above many obstacles. She was a true natural athlete and certainly deserves to have her story told.

The author did lots of research in order to stay true to only factual information and does a good job of pointing out the differences between the society then and now. Society's attitude about homosexuality is discussed as is the Olympic athletes' experiences in 1936. But the most important issue, the one that Helen did the most to influence, is the role of women in the United States in competitive sports. Very few people today can imagine a world like Helen grew up in where there were no coaches or teams for girls at all. The changes Helen and people of her generation were able to accomplish were remarkable. The book is worth reading for this history alone.
