That cry echoes throughout the pages of Bread for the Departed, Bogdan Wojdowski's almost unbearably harrowing novel about the Warsaw ghetto from 1940 to 1942. Told in a chaotic swirl of Polish, Yiddish, Hebrew, and German, Wojdowski's crowning achievement loses very little in this masterful translation by Madeline G. Levine. Episodic, almost without plot, his narrative accumulates weight not through symbol but through sheer detail, amassed and related with horrific detachment. As sketched by Wojdowski, the ghetto is a Boschian nightmare, its corpses turning blue and swollen in the streets, its living skeletons tormented by cold, hunger, typhus, cockroaches, and lice. Its principal character, young David, does whatever is necessary to obtain precious bread, including risking being shot while crossing to the Aryan side of the wall to beg or barter for food. In a world where "food was dearer and more worth saving than life," an emaciated woman named Malka wanders the streets pulling up her skirts for the promise of bread, while David and his gang of starving friends pull the gold teeth from corpses in search of something to sell.

When the Germans begin to round up the Jews for deportation, David and his family must choose whether to hide, fight, or join the transports. In any case, they realize, the same fate awaits. "Why am I still alive?" asks David's father after watching his wife herded into a truck. "In order to endure. There's no alternative," his brother Yehuda gently replies. It is impossible to read these words and not think of Wojdowski, a survivor of the Warsaw ghetto who took his own life in 1994. Written by a survivor who lived in the Warsaw Ghetto from age ten to 12, this novel is an excellent literary depiction of the Holocaust. Bread, the main subject of daily life in the Ghetto, is the central theme. Showing how children adapt to the particular human condition of near-starvation, Wojdowski describes a life of groveling for a scrap of bread. Instead of a plot, this novel contains epic descriptions and chaotic dialog, voices recorded in their authentic, ungrammatical Polish, a sort of literal translation from the Yiddish. Although the subject is excruciating, the detail given by someone who endured the Ghetto adds immeasurably to the canon of Holocaust literature. grphic description of life in warsaw ghetto

This book is labelled fiction, but it is actually autobiographical, and stands up to any non-fiction written about the Warsaw ghetto during 1940-1942. It takes a strong stomach to read this book, because the author has a real eye for the most graphic detail and spares the reader nothing. At the end, you wonder how so many people survived as long as they did under such conditions. The story is told from the point of view of a child (which the author was at the time. It's not a pretty book, but it gives the most realistic picture I've seen yet of what ghetto life really must have been like.

I've just finished reading Bread for the Departed, having recently re-visited Auschwitz and Birkenau. It has to be one of the most powerful books I have read for many years. The power resides not just in the story itself, but in the telling of it - no sentiment, not a single false note, just an overwhelming sense of loss. It should be better known than it is, a wonderful, appalling, uplifting, dispiriting, tragic, book.

Sharing the Holacaust

Imagine you're a child sat at a table with your family; father, mother, uncles, aunts, grandparents, on one of the great festivals celebrated by your people. You are waiting, listening for that one reference to the destruction of the great enemy so that you can whoop with joy. But the conversation turns to matters of concern that you can't quite grasp. Arguments begin about whether resettlement might mean something else. When I first read the opening chapter to "Bread for the Departed" I was mesmerised; it was as though I was really there, part of the gathering. "Bread for the Departed" is the tale of the Warsaw Ghetto as seen through the eyes of one small boy. You share the memories as you sink into the almost evryday "normality" that the nightmare has become. It is a novel that will never leave you.

Excellent reference book drawn from contemporary sources and newspaper articles, combined with perspective insight into this still un-solved murder. While the case will probably never be solved, some great insights into how it was perceived at the time.

Initially part of a combat unit, Rubin contracted hepatitis as a result of repeated bouts of dysentery (a subject that, along with his finally remedied virginity, Rubin is perhaps too frank about) and was sent to an army hospital, where he eventually stayed on as a medic (despite the fact that he hadn't had a chance to complete his pre-med studies back home), witnessing firsthand the awful residue of battle. Among the most moving scenes is his unvarnished description of how he helped a mortally wounded soldier in terrible pain to die by injecting air into a vein. In the book's brief epilogue, Rubin discusses the prejudices he encountered when he returned to America following the collapse of the Republic and how, despite his almost immediate return to combat in WW II, suspicions about his loyalty shadowed him. Many saw the republican cause as identical with communism, which oversimplifies the war to the point of absurdity. Rubin has not rewritten Hemingway's or Orwell's masterpieces on the Spanish Civil War, but his contribution is moving, angry, and deeply convincing. A Must-Read for anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War

One of my main historical interests is the Spanish Civil War and the role played in it by the International Brigades to combat Franco's Nationalist forces. I read "Spain's Cause Was Mine" a couple of years ago, but I recently revisited it and was once again struck by the humanity, nobility and idealism of Hank Rubin. Any historian of the International Brigades will tell you, that a good number of volunteers were college students. Rubin begins his account by retelling how, while sitting on the steps of the UCLA library, someone approached him and asked him if he would like to fight in Spain. He replied 'yes.' So begins his journey from college student to volunteer, to medic, to casualty, and cecoming ultimately, survivor. Rubin provides a simple yet poignant narrative of what went through his mind and what all the volunteers had to face in combat. While initally, disappointed that he was not assigned to front-line duty, he came to appreciate his role behind the scenes. This actually, allowed him to absorb it all and put down his thoughts in writing.

Rubin writes about some of the brutal campaigns from Brunete to Teruel and Grañen. He also places the Spanish Civil War in an international context, noting Germany and Italy's aid to Franco's troops and the US position of maintaining an embargo against the Spanish Second Republic. To anyone knowledgeable about the Spanish Civil War, this isn't anything new. However, coming from an actual participant, who was fully aware of his own government's indirect complicity in causing the demise of the Spanish Second Republic, it is worth reading.

I was touched by a poem written by Rubin following the death of a comrade at arms, who he was unable to save in the medic tent. It captures fear, hesitation and pain that too often accompanies any soldier who goes off to war. I quote it here: "From far away, from Everett on the Puget Sound with the peace of its water the serenty of its green hlls you came from so far to a dusty plain, to mountains without peace. You expected to fly to strike the enemy boldly from the sky, guns roaring your strong hands guiding your plane, triggering your guns. Instead you had to fight on foot, did you ever expect to die? To have a bullet in your head? To suffer your guts torn apart? And was it worth it? Was the pain too much? Was there even pain for you? Was the cost of death too high?

This is an excellent memoir from someone who participated in an event that far too many Americans are unaware of. I recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about the Spanish Civil War. Other recommended books along this vein: Peter Carroll's "The Odyssey of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade," and "American Commander in Spain," by Marion Merriman and Warren Lerude.

The first essay evaluates forms of evidence that may shed light on the nature of orality that led to the surviving notational records of Gregorian chant and assembles evidence that supports the conclusion that fidelity of transmission represented an important goal of the Franks. The second essay treats formulas that cross the boundaries of individual liturgical genres and modes. The third essay defines the varying kinds of musical formulas in chant and proposes a chronological ordering of the genre of second-mode tracts.

The fourth essay treats the transmission of a stable melody and explores the ways in which one basic melody may be adapted to texts of widely differing structures and lengths. The fifth essay deals with a group of unstable melodies that furnished difficulties in modal classification. The sixth essay explores the problems faced by scribes seeking to represent in diastematic notation melodies employing tones not normally admitted into the medieval gamut. The seventh essay takes up the role of the formula in introits, a neumatic genre intended forchoral performance.

The two final essays look at second-mode tracts and at the interrelationship between Roman and Gregorian chant.

Part sleight-of-hand, Part practice and Part common sense

Maybe this is a boy book. I'm a boy, or, at least I was once, and the cool tricks explained here are the sorts which would cause my mother to cringe, "Boys will be boys."

These are the old standby gags you pulled in the third grade, or were amazed when your buddy impressed the girls with them.

The instructions are simple, complete with diagrams and drawings. They are part sleight-of-hand, part practice and part common sense. Baton twirling will take more time to master than spitting a nickel.

The "slice the fruit in the peel" banana trick is here, along with an apple variation. The "smoking fingertips" trick is here, and seems easier than I remember. You'll find the one I never mastered, the "basketball finger spin."

There are balloon tricks, including how to make animals.

My favorite is the "mummified finger," which is the one with the finger-sized hole in a small box.

I fully recommend "How to Spit Nickels" by Jack Mingo for young boys and other tricksters.

A great book for Theatre

I know David Kahn and when he gave me this book to read for my script analysis class, it opened my eyes one how a play writen and why the writer made the choices he made. This book helps you take new scripts and break them down so they can be produced for stage or film. This book is great for actors when they first pick up a script to their rehearsals. It helps for directors when they discover the event chain of the play and character chain of the play. For set desginers when they discover the world of the play of the character. Also it helps for writing because you can see examples of these things in the workings of a completed play. This great book because it's easy reading. Another great tool for those in theatre.

Hollywood Holyland is a window into both the filming and musical scoring of George Stevens production of "The Greatest Story Ever Told." As told by Alfred Newman's long-time music associate and collaborator, Ken Darby, this book takes you to the locations of the shoot, where Mr. Darby relates his experiences on set as "choral director" to the "live source music" that appears throughout the film. The second half of the book tells the sad story of how the film was drastically edited after previews and the score modified time and time again due to these cuts. In addition it describes the agony experienced by both Mr. Darby and Mr. Newman after parts of the score were replaced by Handel's "Messiah" and Verdi's "Requiem." A very interesting look into the world of film production.

The poems written by Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger are astonishing for their beauty; it is equally astonishing that they have survived at all. Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger was born in Czernowitz, Romania, now Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Czernowitz, known for its vibrant mix of languages and ethnicities, was famously described by Selma's cousin, poet Paul Celan, as a city "where human beings and books used to live." Her childhood friends speak of Selma's liveliness and irreverence, her sparkling and mischievous personality, her charming, careless appearance, and her independence. Selma was passionate about ideas, literature, music, and art.
 As the storm of hatred gripping Europe broke in earnest, Selma expressed her desires and fears in poetry. Between the ages of fifteen and seventeen, Selma wrote fifty-two poems and five translations--two from French, two from Yiddish, one from Romanian--that are published here. Selma's verse addressed the longings of a young woman in love; in equal measure, it confronted the incomprehensible violence engulfing Europe. Selma found beauty in the fragility of chestnuts, comfort in the loneliness of rain, grief in rural poverty, and, with despairing courage, faced a diminishing and terrifying future. Selma grew up during a time of rising anti-Semitic and nationalist sentiments. When the Germans and their Romanian allies entered Czernowitz in 1941, Jews faced the brutality associated with fascism: a cruelty that would have preferred that she--and her entire history and culture--be erased. After being quarantined to a ghetto in October, 1941, Jewish Romanians were deported to work camps by Romanian officials. In July of 1942, Selma and her family were sent to Michailowka, a labor camp in Ukraine, where they worked as slaves in unspeakable conditions. Remarkably, some records of Selma's experience have survived; because of them, we know that even in the camp Selma held the beauty of language in her heart along with an aching desire to return to her home. Selma's last piece of writing, a letter to her dear friend, Renee Abramvici-Michaeli, is a record of Selma's abiding courage and her bleak hope that a better world would follow. Selma died of typhus on December 16, 1942, her death reported in the diary of an artist who was with Selma in the labor camp. She was only eighteen. Selma left behind a powerful trace of her life and world in this poetry album. The album's survival is a story in itself. Selma gave the album to Renee to give to Selma's friend Leiser Fichman. Leiser passed the album on to Abramovici-Michaeli before he died when his boat to Palestine was torpedoed and sank. Renee Abramovici-Michaeli traveled to Israel across rivers, mountains, and political borders, losing every piece of luggage except for the backpack that held Selma's album. The album then remained with Renee for thirty years, until Czernowitzers in Israel and family abroad financed a private publication. Selma's work first reached a broader audience, however, after Paul Celan insisted that Selma's "Poem" be printed next to his piece in a 1968 German anthology. An interested journalist, after traveling to Israel to see if he could find out more, brought the poems back to Germany, where the first edition was published in 1980. Now, in this first English translation, Selma's life and her magnificent album can reach out to a new audience that seeks a fuller picture of what was lost. A rich introduction explains the historical context and the story of Selma's life. That these poems exist is stunning enough; that they are as touching and universal as they are is a revelation.

About the Author

Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger was born in Romania in 1924 and died in a forced labor camp in Ukraine at the age of eighteen, in 1942.

 

Irene Silverblatt is professor of cultural anthropology and history at Duke University. She is Selma’s first cousin once removed. She lives in Durham, North Carolina.

 

Helene Silverblatt is a professor of psychiatry and family and community medicine at the University of New Mexico. She is also Selma’s first cousin once removed. She lives in Corrales, New Mexico.

 

Jerry Glenn is professor emeritus of German at the University of Cincinnati. He lives in Southgate, Kentucky.

 

Florian Birkmayer is assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Historically Significant and Deeply Moving

This is a beautiful and deeply poignant book. The author was a resident of Czernowitz, which is now Chernivtsi in Ukraine. She died at the age of 18 in a labor camp. The book was striking not only because the author was a woman of deep sensitivity and great literary talent, but also because her writings strike right to the heart in expressing the feelings of fear, loss and yearning that this young woman felt in the face of the encroaching Nazi menace. Her poetry rested in the hands of friends for 30 years before it was finally published. The book has a very interesting and lengthy introduction discussing the life and circumstances in this cosmopolitan city before and during the war. This is very enriching reading, which ennobles the spirit and helps us to appreciate our own blessings.

Right choice for me!

This was bought as a gift. Recipient enjoys fish AND grilling so it seemed a good choice. The book did have some written notes inside that were not mentioned in listing but it didn't seem to matter to my friend, so that's what counts. I would order from merchant again.

A Really Engaging Flight

I *really* liked this book!

Taya is an "Icarus" in the mountain city-state of Ondinium. Icari are
sort of flying bike-messengers/mailmen/couriers for the city, but with
a bit more social status than that implies in our world. Ondinium is
apparently the only place in the world where the negative-weight, positive mass
metal "Ondium" can be mined, though it is rare even there. An ondium armature
negates enough weight that Icari can fly with metal wings.

Taya is happy in her job, but yearns to pass her diplomatic exams and see
the world as a (flying) diplomat for Ondinium. However, her life changes
dramatically when she makes a daring rescue during a "wireferry" (the
cable cars which connect the citys different peaks and neighborhoods) crash.
Saving the life of an "Elite" woman and her child propels her into the
affairs of the city's upper-crust and into the heart of the conspiracy
that imperils it.

I'm trying to figure out why I liked this book so well and I think there
are several reasons:

1) The setting feels real and lived in. Now perhaps there are many
elements that wouldn't make sense if I thought about them too hard,
but nothing slapped me in the face and said "I'm here to challenge
your suspension of disbelief!". Not only did it feel real, it felt
like a place worth saving, and you could believe the loyalty the
main characters felt for it. No one was blind to the problems of
society, but they all felt they could be addressed in the society's
own context. The police force was shown to be strict but fair, and
not so bound by bureaucracy that they wouldn't deputize the citizenry
when necessary. There was no real democracy, but different interests
were represented on the council, and the press seemed to be completely
free (if no more accurate than our own). Also there was broad
sexual equality and a general lack of obsession with people's
sleeping arrangements. There were obvious borrowings from Republican
Rome, Victorian England, Mandarinism and Hinduism, but I felt they
fell together well.

2) The characters were engaging. Taya is smart and ambitious, but
no steely eyed hero. When circumstances force her to kill someone (a police
officer who mistakenly believes she is trying to destroy the city's great
babbage engine) in self defense, she feels terrible about it. She is
also able to accept her eventual love interest for who he is without trying
to polish all his rough edges. Said love interest is no "love at first
sight" Mr. perfect either. In the "Night Huntress" books I just reviewed,
there's an obvious "something" about the "fate-ed" lover from the get-go.
Here it develops gradually.

3) The plot was interesting. The other "Juno" book I read recently,
_Personal Demons_ was more Supernatural Romance, with the plot designed
to bring the heroine and "hero" together. In _Clockwork Heart_, we get
enough plot that it would work as a "buddy movie" even without the
budding romance.

I would really like to see some more books in this setting.

Wonderful

Near perfect blend of Romance and Steampunk Science Fiction. Characters with depth and charm, even in the supporting roles. A plot that twists, but isn't confusing and does not rely on pulling a rabbit out of a hat at the end.

I really look forward to reading more work by Ms. Pagliassotti and hope there will be some more stories set in this world.

A blend of genres that works.

I really don't know what sort of story this is. It's an adventure, it's a mystery, it's crime novel and a romance kind of all throw into on. Such a complex blend of genre all set in a different world where technology is far behind our modern times in many respects, but has been carefully enough thought out that it makes sense.

At the center of the story is a young woman who works as an Icarus, basically the equivalent of a bicycle messenger only state-sponsored and with wings instead of a bike. The setting is a city-state that supports a caste system of governance. Again, pretty well thought out and not so complicated that you can't follow it. Taya, that main character, is a free-spirited, intelligent, unknowingly pretty protagonist who is drawn into a convoluted series of plots because she happens to be in the right place at the right time to save a woman and child who are members of the highest caste.

Taya is pretty well written and, as is often the case with female main characters in Fantasy works, she blends an interesting combination of stubbornness, willfulness and outright luck. She makes mistakes and causes problems for herself and others as a result and this makes her believable as a character. She is surrounded by a variety of supporting characters that fill their respective places in the story fairly well. No glaringly, out of place supporting cast in this book.

The story follows a fairly quick pace and covers a variety of settings. It's not quite an action/adventure book, but there's enough action to pace the slower social scenes. On the whole, it's well blended. I honestly felt more like I was reading a Urban Fantasy novel than a real Fantasy novel, but the setting is not modern.

If you're looking for traditional Fantasy this is not it. If you are willing to try something that carried hints of Fantasy with no real magic or Knights in shining armor then this is worth the trip. It's not too long and feels in no way like it's the beginning of another series. Kudos to the author for that.
