Although the northern Illinois chapters of the story of Susan “Sukey” Richardson’s escape from slavery on the Underground Railroad are documented, the part played by southern Illinois in that historic episode has remained obscure. Carol Pirtle changes that with her investigation into the 1843 suit Andrew Borders lodged against William Hayes, charging his neighbor with helping slaves from the Borders estate escape to Galesburg. In conjunction with her probe into the past, Pirtle also discovered the Hayes correspondence.

Pirtle documents Hayes’s involvement in the Illinois Underground Railroad through approximately two hundred letters received by Hayes from the early 1820s until his death in 1849. Many of these letters specifically corroborate his participation in the escape of slaves from the Borders estate. One such letter came from T. A. Jones in 1843: “You Dear Sir are to me an unknown friend, yet I believe you are a friend to the poor down trodden Slave. This is as good an introduction as I want from any man. My brother, our cause is a holy one.” Letters written by Galesburg residents show that several prominent citizens of that community also assisted in the affair, proving that Knox College administrators and trustees were active in the Underground Railroad.

Pirtle also includes excerpts from the trial transcript from the 1844 civil case against Hayes, which was tried in Pinckneyville, Illinois. She researched newspaper accounts of the event, most notably those in the Western Citizen and the Sparta Herald. Records of the Covenanter Presbyterian church of which Hayes was a member provide partial explanations of Hayes’s motives.

Telling the story of Hayes and his involvement with Susan Richardson and the Underground Railroad, Pirtle provides insight into the work of abolitionists in Illinois. Escape Betwixt Two Suns, in fact, is one of the few books to substantiate the legends of the Underground Railroad. She tells the story of a quiet man who made a difference, of a man deserving the accolades of a hero.

Couldn't Put This One Down !

With great anticipation, I have awaited the release of this book. Pirtle recounts the true story of Susan "Sukey" Richardson's escape to freedom using the Underground Railroad. Through letters that had been hidden away for more than a century, Pirtle weaves us in and out of the life of one of Sukey's most sympathetic supporters, William Hayes. Through this non-fiction account we learn of the hardships all Americans faced during the mid-19th century. We're told of Sukey, her master, and those brave men and women who risked their lives, reputations, and personal finances to help others make their way to freedom. Equally fascinating is the courtroom drama between Sukey's master and those who allegedly helped the young woman in her run to freedom.
If you're a US history enthusiast, a fan of Illinois history, an Underground Railroad aficionado, a Civil War buff, or just a casual reader who's interested in a captivating story...you'll be sure to enjoy this tome. I highly recommend it.

Roger McKnight’s translation of The Unknown Swedes is the first English-language book to reveal Moberg’s views on emigration, America, and Sweden. In the 1950 edition of The Unknown Swedes, Moberg was guardedly optimistic about the United States. In 1968 Moberg, distraught at America’s involvement in the Vietnam War, appended the chapter "Twenty Years Later" to the new edition of The Unknown Swedes. This essay attacks "vulgar patriotism" in America.

Eight good chapters, and one bad one

In the years 1948-50, while researching the Swedish emigrants to the United States, Vilhelm Moberg wrote a number of articles for several Swedish newspapers. This book contains eight of those articles. Chapter one focuses on what the emigrants knew about America and where they learned it. Chapter two focuses on a fascinating journal kept by a nineteenth century Swedish emigrant, a journal that was apparently one of the cornerstones of Moberg's Emigrant series. The third chapter discusses what he found in a Swedish-American cemetery, while the fourth focuses on the Swedish language newspaper Hemlandet. Chapter five looks at the Church in America (he didn't like it much, but he didn't like the Church in Sweden either). Chapter six discusses what Swedes and Swedish-Americans know about either other, while seven gives his impressions on meeting some Swedish-American relatives, and eight is a rather unfocused explanation of how Swedes have fared in their new country.

The final chapter was written some twenty years after the other eight, and has an entirely different mindset. While he previously liked the United States, he now believes the freedom is dying there, and America is doomed to be a source of emigrants, rather than a destination for them. Finally, he expresses his opinion that American intervention in Vietnam will inevitably result in World War 3, waged between the unfree U.S., and the Soviet Union.

I enjoyed the first chapters of this book. Moberg's observations are quite fascinating, and speak quite clearly to me as an American of Swedish descent. Also, if you are a fan of the Emigrant books, then this book makes quite a fascinating addition, giving you great insights into the origin of those books.

The pill in this book is the final chapter. The first chapters and the Emigrant series were written in the 1950s, while the final chapter and A Time On Earth were written in the 1960s. It is obvious that his mindset was quite different by then (he committed suicide in 1973); his writing was rambling, with a decidedly pessimistic overtone.

So, let me recommend that you get and read this book, but that you feel free to skip the last chapter. Overall, I give this book a somewhat qualified recommendation.

Woolery's 300-plus page encyclopedia on the history of cartoons, both highly treasured and long-forgotten, is an exhaustive tome of virtually every animated character created between 1946 and 1981. Each entry contains original air times, descriptive passages about the shows themselves and an invaluable list of the voice-over artists who breathed personality into WOODY WOODPECKER, DUDLEY-DO-RIGHT, SPEED RACER, MAGILLA GORILLA, COOL MCCOOL, DEPUTY DAWG and hundreds of others. Naturally, the latter is dominated by undisputed kingpins DAWS "YOGI BEAR" BUTLER and MEL "BUGS BUNNY" BLANC, but it's interesting to note the countless TV actors...HOWARD (ERNEST T. BASS) MORRIS, BEA (PETTICOAT JUNCTION) BENADERET and ALLAN (SAM THE BUTCHER) MELVIN...who also lent their talents. Names like BATFINK, CLUTCH CARGO, KIMBA THE WHITE LION, MILTON THE MONSTER and THE MIGHTY HEROES may not ring a bell with the general public anymore, but that's all the more reason for a fun-packed history book like this one. Overpriced and full of errors

Not the most accurate of reference works, and poorly formatted for a professionally-published book, Woolery's Children's Television books used to be the standard for the topic. Luckily, things have changed with the advent of the internet and, much like the Medveds' Golden Turkey Award books, one can see quite obviously that this author never watched most of the programs listed in the book (or read much of the source material for the pointlessly long addendums to the descriptions), and used WAY too many TV Guides for sources. Far too much time and page space is spent on distribution companies and syndication notes.

You can more than likely find an example of nearly all of these shows on YouTube right now. Go get your information from there, rather than wasting your money on one of these EXTREMELY overpriced volumes - I luckily got my copy here recently for $1.02 plus shipping, but there are posted listings on Amazon for hundreds of dollars. It is NOT worth it for a bunch of unverified information.

Most writers studied their own workplace, composing "auto-ethnographies" that problematize these workplaces' local cultures even as they depict writing practices within them.

Henry establishes links between current professional writing practices and composition instruction as both were shaped by national economic development and local postsecondary reorganization throughout the twentieth century. He insists that if we accept basic principles of social constructionism, the text demonstrates ways in which writers "write" workplace cultures to produce goods and services whose effects go far beyond the immediate needs of its clients.

After 14 years as an assistant district attorney, then spending the next 14 as a Columbia law professor "building classroom theories out of stale and secondhand materials," Ulviller, who is married to a judge, determined he was "somewhat out of it" and arranged to work in the field with the troops. The precinct he writes about in this banally written briefcops, in Manhattan at least, "chuckle" a lotis in the East Village. Most often the pedagogue in Ulviller takes over, squelching the raconteur with tedious, academic detail of law, and the human element only occasionally surfaces in glimpses of the personalities of suspects, victims and police. Law students, perhaps, will be interested in the author's interpretations of "probable cause," "search and seizure" and other legal matters, but lay readers will be impatient with the lectures as they cruise in a police car, anxious to see more of the scene.
