Arnold Barton outlines dilemmas created by the great migration of Swedes to the United States from 1840 through 1940 and the complex love-hate relationship that resulted between those who stayed and those who left. During that hundred-year period, one Swede out of five voluntarily immigrated to the United States, and four-fifths of those immigrants remained in their new country. This study seeks to explore the far-reaching implications of this mass migration for both Swedes and Swedish Americans.

The Swedes were a literate, historically aware people, and the 1.2 million Swedes who immigrated to the United States offer a particularly well-documented and illuminating case study. Barton has skillfully woven into the text translations of little known published and unpublished Swedish sources from both sides of the Atlantic, to embody—in haunting human terms—both what was gained and what was lost through emigration.

Past studies have traditionally shown ethnic mobilization to be a defensive reaction against the exclusive nativism of resident Americans. Barton convincingly demonstrates, however, that the creation of a distinctive Swedish-American identity was at least equally an expression of the immigrants’ need to justify leaving their homeland to their former compatriots and to themselves by asserting a rightful and unique place within the Swedish national community. He concludes that the relationship between Swedes and Swedish Americans was essentially similar to that experienced by other peoples divided by migration, and that the long debate over the United States and emigration at its deepest level reveals both hopes and fears most conspicuously symbolized by America and "Americanization" in an increasingly integrated world undergoing the relentless advance of modernization.

The best book for anyone researching the folklore of Dwarves

Presented in a clear and interesting manner, this book contains a variety of myths and legends about the European Dwarves. Covering a scope from Norse legends to fairy tales, it is the ultimate guide to the subject manner. The book is also packed with illustrations, most of which are fairly good. It is part of the Enchanted World Series from Time Life, and I would also recommend the other 20 volumes in this series

This book is similar in appearance, style, and presentation to other volumes in the Time-Life Enchanted World series, but contains content focusing on yet another creature of myth and fantasy: the dwarf. As with other Enchanted World volumes, "Dwarfs" contains numerous color illustrations that make it an aesthetically pleasing book. While the text is likely not detailed enough for use as source material for academia, it IS an informative, introductory read for those unfamiliar with the fantasy genre, and even those well-versed in myth or fantasy are likely to find some interesting information between the covers of this book.

Great Fantasy Book

I had originally been a subscriber to the Enchanted Word Series from Time-Life Books and thought I had all the titles until I came across this book by accident on Amazon. As typical, the book provides a comprehensive look at the subject it is reviewing. In this case it is Dwarfs. Great information coupled with fantastic pictures. If you are a fan of fantasy, dreams, or things of the other world I would highly recommend this book. Actually, I would highly recommend this series.

In her analysis, Schuetz is careful to define these trials as popular trials. Characteristically, popular trials involve persons, issues, or crimes of social interest that attract extensive public interest and involvement. Such trials make a contribution to the ongoing historical dialogue about the meaning of justice and the legal system, while reflecting the values of the time and place in which they occur.

Schuetz examines the kinds of communication that transpired and the importance of gender in the trials by applying a different current rhetorical theory to each trial text. In every chapter, she explains her chosen interpretive theory, compares that framework with the discourse of the trial, and makes judgments about the meaning of the trial texts based on the interpretive theory.

Editorial errors

This review is based on reading only two of the nine subject chapters. The errors detected within these two chapters are ones that reasonable editing should have detected. Dating errors (Lee surrendered on April 9, not 7). Johnson did not appear in Surratt's trial after his opening because he was dying...a significant factor in her defense. "Women of this era lacked knowledge of their bodies..." is a perception of time, not a fact. A continuation of "control by men", soon to be reduced, was extended into "care of women" during their cycle into the selection of apparatus' to be used, but the application thereof.

On the technical content side, in the Borden case, the author put too much stock in the testimony of a couple of witnesses for the prosecution who portrayed the step-mother/step-daughter relationship adversely when the defense presented far more witnesses showing a reasonably good relationship between the two. This is contrary to the author's position that Lizzie was of good character in almost all other aspects of her life.
I would have liked to see more exploitation of the menstrual cycle issue and the effect that had on the entire incident.

Swedish immigrants in general were conservative, but Bengston and others—most notably Joe Hill—joined the working-class labor movement on the left, primarily as Debsian socialists, although their ranks included other socialists, communists, and anarchists. Involved in the radical labor movement on many fronts, Bengston was the editor of Svenska Socialisten from 1912 until he dropped out of the Scandinavian Socialist Federation in 1920. Even after 1920, however, his sympathies remained with the movement he had once strongly espoused.

The Oak Ridge Boys are one of the most successful groups in country music today. Their roots are in gospel music, however, and the authors interviewed most of the singers who have performed with the group since its inception in the mid-1940s to compile this history. Indeed, there were 35 other Oak Ridge quartet members prior to the famous foursome who have made up the group since 1973. Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban, and Joe Bonsall are the ones who took the group to its greatest fame in gospel music and then made the controversial transition to country and popular music with such hits as "Y'all Come Back Saloon" and "Elvira." About the Author
Jack Higgins is a Chicago-based political cartoonist whose work appears in publications worldwide. In 1989, he won a Pulitzer Prize, and he has won many other awards. He began his career drawing cartoons for the Daily Northwestern. He has been interviewed on the Today show, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, Good Morning America, and CNN. A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross (Worcester, Massachusetts), he was recently honored with the school’s Sanctae Crucis Award.

Chicago Politics in a Nutshell

It's been years since I've lived in Chicago, but I've kept track of the politics via the Sun-Times Web site.

I've followed Jack Higgins' cartoons, so I bought this book in order to have a collection of his best. My sentimental favorite is the one about Siskel and Ebert, but I enjoyed his recent ones about Obama as well - how fortunate to be at the center of such an important election, and be able to comment on it!

I highly recommend this book! It was easy to read through in one sitting, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well.
