About the Author
Craig Dworkin is the author of Reading the Illegible (Northwestern, 2003), and the editor of Architectures of Poetry (2004), Language to Cover a Page: The Early Writing of Vito Acconci (2006), The Consequence of Innovation: 21st Century Poetics (2008), and, with Marjorie Perloff, The Sound of Poetry/The Poetry of Sound (2009).
Kenneth Goldsmith’s writing has been called "some of the most exhaustive and beautiful collage work yet produced in poetry" by Publishers Weekly. Goldsmith is the author of ten books of poetry. He teaches writing at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is a senior editor of PennSound, an online poetry archive.

Not a bad effort. Reasonable anthology given the stated aims and contextualization of the introduction. Some inclusions I would disagree with, Joseph Kosuth's contribution is not an example of the kind of writing they claim. It is largely an anthology which includes well known artists with lesser known ones in order to put forward a cause to believe in. I personally find that this way of making art, or writing, is still very 20th century: based on ideas of modification of an existing form of art, not really dissolving forms per se (important in this age of globalization). Also, the exclusion of key Latin Americans doing this kind of thing 50 years ago is a bit troubling.

A brilliant start as Conceptual Writing gets examined

Dworkin and Goldsmith provide a solid start for one to look at or teach Conceptual Writing today. This anthology is best paired with the Les Figues Press book which came out about a year after this, as well as Vanessa Place's writings on Conceptualisms. This massive volume tries to get it all in there, and as such may lack a bit of a pathway for newcomers while at the same time providing a crazy richness and variety which will likely allow pretty much any reader to find something in here which speaks to them and sparks their interest. It includes writing primarily from the US and Europe, and even decided to leave a few texts in their original languages. Its far-reaching historical scope also does a lot to remind readers--be they authors, aspiring authors, scholars or readers who just love reading--of the fact that Conceptual Writing as Goldsmith and Dworkin see and definite is not something that has suddenly popped out of the woodwork, but rather is something that has been here for a long time and needed to be acknowledged, regrouped, and examined. This anthology provides a first tool to that end. I'm Against Against Expression, Somewhat

I hate conceptual writing and utterly despise the modern-day (or should I say post-modern day) typical liberal college child mindset of incessantly pursuing very radical yet very uncreative ideas that create no meaning of any significant value or of any significant interest and are the hallmark of pseudo intellectuals. That said, I genuinely enjoyed this book if only for the ideas and motivation it gave me to create my own work which unfortunately required me to devise projects along the same vein. Do not purchase this book (of course if you're buying it, it's probably because your professor requires you to do so) under the presumption that you will enjoy reading it -- because despite the mass majority of my classmates being extremely radical liberals who condone and idolize these sorts of "arts", I blatantly recall none of them ever enjoyed opening the book (and I was good friends with many of them) -- but keep in mind that this book has a lot of inspiration... if only, to make you say, "Hah, I can do better than this sorry excuse for manure! Here, watch!"
