About the Author
Timothy LeVan (BFA, piano, Carnegie-Mellon: graduate work, University of Lausanne; Conservatory of Fribourg, Switzerland) is on the faculty of the Masters of Opera degree program cosponsored by the Tri-Cities Opera Company and the State University of New York at Binghamton. Previously he has worked at Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Opera Theatre, and Ithaca Opera and had a private vocal-coaching studio in New York City. He is at work on a companion volume, Masters of the French Art Song, including the complete song texts of Chausson, Debussy, Duparc, Faure, Poulenc, and Ravel.

This is a collection of song lyrics (or libretti) and translations.
The only thing I would call into question is the claim that the book had "poetic" translations of the songs. I'm not sure what this would mean. What's there is a word-by-word translation and then an interpretation of that, such that it makes sense in English. That part, of course, sounds like poetry because the songs are largely poetic. These are not "dumb translations" like so much of what I see. Are they perfect? I don't know enough to say. But I think that LeVan paid attention to every line and understands quite a bit about the sometimes ancient, poetic Italian that these songs contain.
Both of these types of translations are very useful to the voice student or anyone wanting to learn or simply study these songs. The selection of songs is quite good. There are many which are somewhat obscure and hard to find. It seems a simple little book, but a lot of work and thought must have gone into it. It's a great reference.

one of a kind

This out of print book was expensive and hard to find. Amazon had the best price and responded quickly with a book in perfect condition. I wanted a book that had my favorite Italian art songs in translation, and this book was almost perfect, though I wish there was a 2nd volume with more songs. The strict Italian rendering is helpful in learning the syntax of Italian, and the "poetic" translation is meant to render the imagery as intended. Like all translation one must depend upon the artistic sense of the translator and I am happy with the result. The book is a work of love and required enormous effort by the author, so the expense seems perfectly justifiable. Any non-Italian speaking lover of Italian poetry and art song should find this book invaluable. I can imagine that beginning singers would also profit from the detailed nature of the translations.
